Amy’s Donuts: A Fond Farewell to Valley Favorites (Now Closed)

It is with sadness that we report Amy’s Donuts in Spokane Valley has permanently closed its doors. While no longer operational, it’s worth acknowledging the impact this chain brought to the Spokane doughnut scene during its time. Amy’s was celebrated for its truly enormous variety of options, offering an almost overwhelming selection of creatively topped and filled doughnuts that catered to every imaginable preference.

Located on Sprague Avenue, Amy’s Donuts was impossible to miss, thanks to the epic, colorful murals adorning all sides of its building. These vibrant artworks were as much a part of its identity as the doughnuts themselves, drawing in customers and becoming a local landmark. Though it’s no longer serving, Amy’s left a memorable mark on Spokane’s doughnut landscape, representing a trend of bold flavors and artistic presentation.

Mike’s Old Fashioned Donuts: A Timeless Classic

For those who appreciate the simple perfection of a traditional doughnut, Mike’s Old Fashioned Donuts is a beacon in the Spokane Valley. Conveniently located adjacent to a gas station off Sprague Avenue, this shop might appear unassuming, but it consistently draws a crowd, a true testament to its exceptional quality. On a recent Tuesday morning, their popularity was evident as only maple bars remained, having been scooped up by eager customers – a delicious problem to have for any bakery!

And those maple bars? Absolutely delicious! What truly sets Mike’s apart is their commitment to freshness, proudly displaying a daily timesheet that indicates when each type of doughnut will be hot and ready. The optimum time to visit, we were told, is around 9 AM, when the full array of daily doughnuts has just been rolled out. This dedication ensures every bite is as fresh and flavorful as possible.

Here’s a glimpse into their daily fresh schedule, though times are estimates:

  • 6 am: Old Fashioned and Cake Donuts
  • 6:30 am: Bars
  • 8 am: Apple Fritters
  • 8:45 am: Persians and Raised Glazed

Beyond the daily staples, Mike’s also offers delightful daily features:

  • Monday: French Crullers

  • Wednesday: Buttermilk Bars and Blueberry
  • Thursday: French Crullers and Cook’s Choice
  • Friday: Blueberry and Devils Food Cake

This meticulous schedule ensures a rotating variety that keeps customers coming back for more. Mike’s Old Fashioned Donuts truly embodies the spirit of classic American baking, making it a beloved spot in the Spokane community.

The Donut route stamped on the front of a box

The Donut Route: Doorstep Delights (Status: Possibly Closed)

The Donut Route introduced an innovative concept to Spokane, offering a dedicated doughnut delivery service that brought freshly baked treats right to your doorstep. Unfortunately, recent updates suggest their operations may have ceased, as their information hasn’t been refreshed in several months. While their current status is uncertain, their unique approach to bringing joy to Spokane residents deserves recognition.

During its active period, The Donut Route revolutionized how Spokane enjoyed doughnuts. Each weekend, delicious doughnuts were freshly baked in Downtown Spokane and then hand-delivered, creating a delightful convenience. Ordering was effortless: customers simply placed their order online, received a text with an estimated delivery time, and then anticipated a box of warm, fresh-baked goodness arriving at their home.

One particular standout was their apple fritter, which many (including myself) considered to be among the very best in Spokane – a perfect balance of crispy edges, tender interior, and generous apple chunks. Their menu was robust, featuring classics like Old Fashioned Donuts, Raised Glazed, Maple Bars, Chocolate Bars, various cake doughnuts (Vanilla, Chocolate, Maple, Chai), and even a convenient variety box. Customers could also customize their order with sprinkles – because, as we know, life is always better with more sprinkles!

Delivery fees were reasonable, with a $3 charge within the Spokane area, and a distance-based fee for surrounding regions like Mead, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Medical Lake, and Airway Heights. Deliveries typically occurred on Saturdays and Sundays between 8 AM and 11 AM, ensuring a perfect start to the weekend. For those needing a specific pickup time, downtown options were also available. We hope for their return or for a similar service to emerge, as The Donut Route truly carved out a special niche in Spokane’s sweet scene.

Beyond Local Gems: Other Doughnut Options

While supporting local businesses is always encouraged, Spokane also has other options for your doughnut fix. You’ll find a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts location off Sullivan in Spokane Valley, known for its iconic hot glazed doughnuts and longer operating hours. Additionally, most local grocery stores carry a selection of doughnuts, offering a convenient option for a quick grab-and-go treat.
