Gather Your Ingredients: What You’ll Need for Your Nutter Butter Bats

One of the best aspects of this recipe is the minimal and easily accessible ingredient list. You won’t need to scour specialty stores for rare items; everything can be found at your local grocery store or craft supply shop, or ordered conveniently online. This simplicity ensures that anyone can whip up a batch of these fun bats without any stress.

Essential Ingredients & Supplies:

  • Dark Brown Candy Melts: These are crucial for creating the perfect bat-like appearance. You can often find them at craft stores, baking supply shops, or readily available online. Dark chocolate chips can be a substitute, but candy melts are designed to melt smoothly and harden quickly, providing a professional finish.
  • Nutter Butter Cookies: The star of our show! Their iconic peanut butter sandwich cookie shape is naturally perfect for transforming into a bat body.
  • Candy Eyes: These small, edible eyeballs are what truly bring your Nutter Butter Bats to life, giving them their charming, slightly spooky gaze. Stock up on these, as they’re versatile for many Halloween treats! They are widely available and can be ordered on Amazon.
  • Miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: These delightful chocolate and peanut butter treats serve a dual purpose: they are delicious and perfectly shaped to be sliced in half to form the bats’ wings.
  • White Decorating Gel: A tube of white decorating gel is essential for attaching the candy eyes and, more importantly, for drawing those cute little bat smiles.
  • Parchment Paper: A baker’s best friend for no-bake recipes! Parchment paper prevents your chocolate-dipped cookies from sticking and makes cleanup a breeze.

The Right Tools for the Job: Equipment for Effortless Bat Making

While this recipe is incredibly simple, having a few key pieces of equipment can make the process even smoother and more enjoyable. These tools are often staples in a well-equipped kitchen and can be reused for countless other baking and no-bake projects.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Candy Dipper: If you plan on making many chocolate-dipped treats, a candy dipper or a dipping tool can be incredibly helpful. It allows you to submerge and remove cookies from the melted candy melts with minimal mess and maximum efficiency, ensuring an even coating.
  • Large Mixing Bowl: A sturdy mixing bowl is essential for melting your candy melts. We particularly love a glass batter bowl with a handle because it makes stirring easy and keeps the bowl stable on the counter, preventing spills and allowing you to dip comfortably.
  • Parchment Paper: As mentioned, parchment paper is indispensable for easy cleanup and ensuring your treats don’t adhere to the counter or baking sheet. Lay out a generous sheet before you begin.
  • Baking Sheet: A baking sheet with sides is highly recommended. It provides a flat, portable surface for your parchment paper and dipped cookies. The raised edges offer peace of mind, preventing any clumsy mishaps where your freshly dipped bats might slide off onto the floor (trust me, it’s a lesson learned the hard way!).

Tips for Perfect Nutter Butter Bats Every Time

Crafting these spooky treats is straightforward, but a few pointers can ensure your Nutter Butter Bats are not only delicious but also picture-perfect:

  • **Melting Candy Melts:** The key to smooth, dippable candy melts is to follow the package instructions carefully. Overheating can cause them to seize or become clumpy. Use a microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, or a double boiler for gentle, even melting.
  • **Work Quickly:** Once the Nutter Butter cookies are dipped, the candy melts will begin to set relatively fast. Have your Reese’s cups (sliced in half) and candy eyes ready and within reach so you can attach them before the chocolate hardens.
  • **Securing the Wings:** When placing the Reese’s cup halves for wings, gently press them into the still-wet chocolate coating on the Nutter Butter. This will help them adhere firmly as the chocolate sets.
  • **Pre-Slice Reese’s:** Save time and ensure uniformity by slicing all your mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in half before you start dipping. A sharp knife works best for clean cuts.
  • **Chill for Speed:** If you’re short on time and need the chocolate to set faster, carefully transfer your parchment-lined baking sheet of bats to the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.
  • **Storage:** Once hardened, Nutter Butter Bats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for longer freshness.

Ingredients

  • Dark brown candy melts
  • Nutter Butter cookies
  • Candy Eyes
  • Mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • White Decorating Gel

Instructions

  1. Melt the brown candy melts according to package instructions.
  2. Prepare your area by placing a sheet of parchment paper on your counter. Parchment paper is vital as it makes sure the cookies won’t stick!
  3. Unwrap the Reese’s Cups. Slice each mini Reese’s Cup in half to create the bat wings.
  4. Using the decorating gel, place a dot on the back of two candy eyes. Attach these two candy eyes to the front of a Reese’s Cup half. Set aside. Repeat for all Reese’s Cup halves.
  5. Dip a Nutter Butter cookie into the brown candy melts and evenly coat. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
  6. Lay the covered Nutter Butter cookie on the parchment paper.
  7. Working quickly, place two prepared Reese’s Cup halves (with eyes attached) on the top sides of the cookie to form the bat wings, before the candy hardens.
  8. Add a smile beneath the Reese’s cup using the white decorating gel.
  9. Let the bats sit on the parchment paper until the candy is completely hardened, typically 15-20 minutes at room temperature, or briefly in the refrigerator.

Kitchen Tools

  • Parchment Paper
  • Cookie Sheets
  • Candy Eyes (while an ingredient, also a tool for decoration!)
