Ferrante’s Marketplace Cafe
After numerous recommendations from friends, we finally had the pleasure of discovering Ferrante’s Marketplace Cafe, a delightful spot tucked away in a shopping complex on Spokane’s South Hill. This unique establishment combines a cozy restaurant with a small marketplace offering wines and gifts. The dining experience is casual and straightforward: you order at the counter, choose a comfortable table, and your food is then called out from a window at the back of the room. The menu presents a tempting variety of Italian options, including delicious pizzas, hearty calzones, savory paninis, and classic pasta dishes. My companion, John, thoroughly enjoyed the Carbonara, which featured a lovely Cougar Gold Sauce, ham, a fried egg, and peppers. The pasta was flavorful and served in a generous portion. I opted for the fettuccine; while a bit mild for my personal preference, it would be an excellent choice for those who enjoy a white sauce on their pasta without an abundance of herbs or spices.
For dessert lovers, Ferrante’s boasts a rotating case of exquisite gelatos, available by the cone or cup, offering a perfect sweet ending to your meal.

The Latah Creek and Hangman Hills area, known for its scenic landscapes, also harbors some incredibly special dining destinations that combine rustic charm with exceptional culinary experiences.
Chaps
While I strive for impartiality in this Spokane Restaurants list, I must confess that Chaps is, quite honestly, one of my absolute favorite places to eat in the entire world! There’s an undeniable magic about this restaurant that makes it truly special; I would happily dine here weekly, or even daily, if my waistline permitted. From the very moment you pull up to Chaps, you get an immediate sense that you’re in for a truly memorable experience. The entire establishment exudes an atmosphere of pure love and happiness, offering homemade goodness from a menu crafted with care, complemented by an incredible on-site bakery.
We’re certainly not alone in our adoration for Chaps, as it was famously featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” a few years ago. The show spotlighted their exquisite French Toast, comforting Baked Oatmeal, and the rich, flavorful Mushroom and Brie Soup – all dishes that perfectly encapsulate the restaurant’s charm.
Favorite Menu Items (since I can’t possibly list everything):
The delicate Chocolate Orange Scone.
The wholesome Baked Oatmeal.
Honestly, you simply cannot go wrong with any single item on their menu! Celeste and her dedicated staff ensure that each dish is served with an exceptional level of love and meticulous care. If you haven’t yet experienced the enchantment of Chaps, I implore you to go and discover this truly special restaurant in Spokane.

Liberty Lake Restaurants: Unexpected Culinary Gems
Liberty Lake, a community just east of Spokane, holds some delightful culinary surprises, including restaurants that might defy initial expectations but consistently deliver exceptional dining experiences.
Hay J’s Bistro
Hay J’s Bistro in Liberty Lake, Washington, is precisely the kind of restaurant that will pleasantly surprise you. As you pull into the parking lot, you might question if you’ve arrived at the correct destination; Hay J’s Bistro shares a lot with a gas station, and its sign is notably simple and unassuming. However, this is a prime example of why you should never judge a book (or a restaurant) by its cover. What appears plain on the outside transforms into a truly delicious classic American restaurant, serving inventive and beautifully presented menu choices in a sophisticated atmosphere. Their shared plates are perfect for starting your meal, including delicacies like Burrata, Ahi Tuna Tartare, Blackened Bleu Tender Tips, and Ponzu Calamari. Entree options are equally impressive, featuring Parmesan Crusted Halibut, comforting Chicken & Truffle Risotto, the daily special of Snake River Farms American Kobe Cut Of The Day, and classic Pappardelle Ala Bolognese. Hay J’s offers distinct lunch and dinner menus; while lunch features similar exquisite entrees to dinner, it also includes fantastic burgers and sandwiches. Don’t miss their White Cheddar & Bacon Kobe Burger during lunchtime!
Reservations are highly recommended to ensure you secure a table, so be sure to give them a call before heading to this hidden gem.
