Have you ever dreamed of enriching your cruise vacation by truly connecting
with the local communities you visit, but felt unsure how to ensure your
contributions make a genuine impact? It’s a common dilemma for many travelers:
a desire to support local initiatives, coupled with the concern that donations
might not reach those most in need. During my recent adventure aboard the
magnificent Carnival Splendor, I discovered a powerful solution to this very challenge:
Carnival Cruise Line’s “Give Back with Purpose Community Tour Excursion” in
the vibrant city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This unique excursion promised
not just a scenic tour, but a heartfelt opportunity to engage directly with
the local culture and contribute meaningfully to its future.

Experience Purposeful Travel: A Puerto Vallarta Community Excursion
My journey into the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s communities began with a blend
of anticipation and a touch of skepticism. The excursion description from
Carnival painted a picture of a tour that was part cultural immersion, part
opportunity to experience charming local towns, and entirely focused on giving
back. Having visited Puerto Vallarta many times and always cherishing its vibrant
spirit, the idea of deepening my connection through a “give back” initiative
was incredibly appealing. I was eager to see firsthand how Carnival facilitated
this direct community engagement and what real impact it had. This wasn’t just
another scenic drive; it was an invitation to understand and support the daily
lives of the people who make this corner of Mexico so special.
Journey to the North: Flavors and First Impressions
The adventure commenced as our comfortable tour van departed from the bustling
cruise port, heading north towards the picturesque towns of Sayulita and San
Pancho. The drive itself was a scenic introduction to the region, with lush
green landscapes giving way to glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. Our first stop
was a delightful roadside stand, a quintessential Mexican experience that
immediately immersed us in local flavors. Here, we were introduced to the exotic
sweetness of jackfruit and savored the refreshing taste of fresh coconut,
elevated by a squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of chili pepper – a truly authentic
culinary awakening. It was more than just a snack; it was an opportunity to
support local vendors directly, a small but significant act of giving back
that set the tone for the rest of the day. The array of colorful fruits and
traditional sweet treats on display was a feast for the senses, inviting us
to sample and appreciate the rich agricultural bounty of the area.

Connecting Through Education: A Visit to San Ignacio School
Our next stop brought us to a humble school in San Ignacio, an experience that
stirred a complex mix of emotions within me. We arrived bearing a basket of
fresh fruit for the students, a simple gesture of nourishment. While the intent
was pure, I confess to feeling a slight unease. My initial concern was whether
our presence, as a group of foreign tourists, might disrupt their precious
learning time or make the children feel like they were part of a spectacle. The
ethics of involving children in tourism, particularly with photography, is a
topic I often ponder. This segment of the tour left me with questions, pondering
the delicate balance between cultural exchange and respecting daily routines.
However, as the moments unfolded, my reservations began to soften. Each child
eagerly selected a piece of fruit, their faces lighting up with genuine smiles
as they enjoyed the simple treat. They approached us with an open curiosity,
asking about our homes and our names, sharing their own with infectious enthusiasm.
Their innocence and eagerness to connect transcended any perceived barriers. It
was a moment of pure, unadulterated human connection, reminding me that sometimes,
the most profound impacts come from the simplest interactions.

The children proudly showed us their school garden, a small oasis where they
cultivate fruits and vegetables, tending to them during recess and after
classes. This hands-on learning, combined with their shared ambition to learn
English, highlighted their drive and resourcefulness. We learned that English
is not a formal part of their curriculum, with their dedicated teacher doing
her best to impart what she knows. My deepest hope is that our brief presence,
and the conversations we shared, served as a positive and encouraging interlude
in their day, fueling their dreams and not merely acting as a fleeting distraction.
It underscored the importance of such tours in bringing global awareness to
local educational needs.
The Artistic Charm of San Francisco (San Pancho)
From the school, our journey continued to the enchanting town of San Francisco,
affectionately known as San Pancho. This vibrant coastal village, often
nicknamed for its own “Golden Gate Bridge” (a local landmark, not the famous
San Francisco structure), immediately captivated us with its artistic flair and
relaxed atmosphere. We strolled through its colorful streets, admiring the
myriad street murals that adorned walls and buildings, each telling a story
of local life, culture, and nature. These murals were not just decorations;
they were expressions of community identity and creativity, reflecting the
soul of San Pancho.

A brief but invigorating walk along the beach allowed us to soak in the serene
beauty of the Pacific coast before reconvening with our bus. The fresh ocean
breeze and the rhythmic sound of waves provided a peaceful contrast to the
bustling town. Our exploration continued with a fascinating visit to Mexicolate,
a local chocolate shop that embodies passion and tradition. Here, we learned
about the intricate process of cacao cultivation and chocolate production, from
bean to bar. The owners shared their mission to spread joy through their
artisanal chocolates, highlighting the rich history and cultural significance
of cacao in Mexico. This stop offered a delightful insight into local entrepreneurship
and the opportunity to directly support their sustainable business by purchasing
their exquisite products.

Entre Amigos: A Hub of Creativity and Sustainability
Without a doubt, the highlight of the entire excursion was our visit to Entre
Amigos, a truly inspiring “helping hands” foundation and community center. This
organization is a beacon of hope and innovation in San Pancho, dedicated to
fostering community development through education, art, and environmental
sustainability. I was profoundly moved by their mission and the tangible impact
they have on the lives of both children and adults.
Entre Amigos brilliantly transforms recycled materials into beautiful and
functional art, teaching valuable skills and promoting environmental awareness
simultaneously. Imagine a giant library, bursting with books and creative
spaces, serving as a vibrant hub for the entire community. It’s an open, fun,
and welcoming environment where imagination thrives, and learning is a joyful
pursuit. From educational programs to workshops in various crafts, the center
provides invaluable resources and opportunities for personal growth.

It was incredibly reassuring to learn that Entre Amigos is supported, in part,
by funds generated from this very “Give Back with Purpose” tour. Knowing that
a portion of our excursion cost directly contributes to such a vital and
impactful organization reinforced the true meaning of purposeful travel. Their
dedication to collecting and transforming recycling from multiple cities into
meaningful art and resources is a testament to what community initiative can
achieve. I left Entre Amigos with a profound desire to find future ways to
support their commendable efforts.
Lunch by the Ocean and Final Reflections
Our tour also included a brief stop at the Cirque Du Soleil founders’ center,
a place dedicated to teaching the captivating art of the circus. Although there
was no practice in session during our visit, it offered a glimpse into another
facet of the community’s creative spirit.
The day culminated in a truly idyllic lunch experience at a gorgeous restaurant
situated right on the Pacific Ocean. The ambiance was incredibly chill and
relaxing, providing the perfect setting to unwind and reflect on the diverse
experiences of the day. As the waves gently rolled in, our engaging tour guide
prepared fresh guacamole and mole right at our tableside, adding a personalized
and authentic touch to our meal. Lunch was a delicious part of the tour package,
though drinks were an additional cost, ranging from $2 to $5, payable with
both cash and credit card.
Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the planned turtle center due to the
local biologist’s illness, leading to its temporary closure. Despite this minor
change, the day remained rich with discovery and meaningful interactions. From
lunch, we made our way back to the ship, leaving us with the rest of the evening
free to further explore Puerto Vallarta or simply relax, carrying with us a
heart full of new experiences and a deeper appreciation for the communities
we had encountered.

Essential Travel Tips for Your Excursion
To make the most of your “Give Back with Purpose Community Tour” in Puerto
Vallarta, consider these practical tips:
-
Comfortable Footwear: Opt for shoes that are suitable for
both walking on streets and sandy beaches. While my favorite
Birkenstocks
are usually great, they weren’t ideal for the incredibly hot sand we
encountered. Closed-toe sandals or light sneakers would be a better choice. -
Bring Cash: It’s highly recommended to carry some local
currency (Mexican Pesos) or US Dollars. This will be useful for purchasing
delightful local treats at roadside stands, souvenirs or art from Entre
Amigos, and for any additional drinks during lunch. -
Tour Duration: Be prepared for a comprehensive 6-hour+
tour, which includes approximately 1.5 hours of driving time. The roads are
generally straight and smooth, minimizing any concerns about motion sickness,
but it’s good to be aware of the travel time. -
Sun Protection: Puerto Vallarta can be quite sunny. Bring
sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the tropical sun. -
Hydration: While water might be provided, carrying a
reusable water bottle is always a good idea to stay hydrated throughout the
day. -
Open Mind: Embrace the spirit of cultural exchange. Be
open to new experiences, ask questions, and engage respectfully with the
local communities you encounter.
