Steering the ship of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no small feat, and at its helm is President Kevin Feige. His visionary leadership has transformed a collection of comic book heroes into a global cultural phenomenon, delivering countless unforgettable cinematic and television experiences. It was a truly remarkable privilege to sit down with him for an exclusive interview during the high-energy press junket for Thor: Ragnarok, offering a rare glimpse into the mind behind Marvel’s unparalleled success.

Unpacking the MCU’s Future: An Exclusive Interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige
A Year of Cosmic Adventures: Guardians, Thor, and Spider-Man
Our conversation with Kevin Feige naturally began by reflecting on an extraordinary year for Marvel Studios, marked by the critically acclaimed releases of both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok. These two films, though distinctly different in tone, showcased the immense breadth and versatility of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige articulated his immense satisfaction:
Kevin Feige: “It’s pretty awesome, and I particularly love that little Peter Parker, still in high school, is right in the middle of all that cosmic action. It’s incredibly cool, and it really underscores what I’ve always wanted people to understand: just because something is based on a comic doesn’t mean they’re all cut from the same cloth. It doesn’t mean they all inhabit the same exact tonal world. These were our three major film releases this year, and I always knew, and certainly hoped, they would be profoundly exciting and offer diverse experiences for our audience.”
This statement encapsulates Feige’s enduring vision for the MCU – a universe rich in interconnected narratives but equally diverse in its storytelling approach and thematic exploration. The success of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, alongside the grounded narrative of Spider-Man: Homecoming, demonstrated Marvel’s mastery in balancing grand spectacle with intimate character journeys, all while maintaining a consistent level of quality that fans have come to expect.
The Road to Avengers: Infinity War: Unprecedented Crossovers
The conversation quickly turned to the much-anticipated future of the MCU, particularly the groundbreaking crossovers hinted at in the wake of these new releases. The idea of the Guardians of the Galaxy meeting Thor was a major talking point among fans, and Feige’s answer was both direct and thrilling:
Will Guardians of the Galaxy meet Thor in the future?
Kevin Feige: “Yes, and it comes out in May of next year.”
This confirmed what many had speculated: the monumental cinematic event of Avengers: Infinity War. The next question probed deeper into the nature of this unprecedented team-up:
Is it going to be a major set up or merely a cameo?
Kevin Feige: “No, Infinity War is truly a comprehensive meeting of those minds, and Thor, in particular, will spend significant time with the Guardians. We’ve already shot some incredibly fun scenes between them. The cosmic adventurers are going to spend a lot of time together in that movie, which I think audiences will absolutely adore.”
The scale of production for such an ambitious project was immense, and Feige provided an update on the rigorous filming schedule:
Is that filming in Atlanta?
Kevin Feige: “We have actually finished filming Avengers: Infinity War. They are currently deep into production for the Untitled Avengers sequel. Our production for these massive films started in January of this year and will continue nonstop through January of next year. Black Panther has started and finished its principal photography, and Ant-Man and The Wasp have started and are almost finished while all of that larger Avengers production has been ongoing. It’s a relentless, but incredibly rewarding, process.”
This glimpse into the relentless production schedule highlights the sheer logistical marvel that is the MCU, orchestrating multiple concurrent film projects while meticulously building towards a grand, interconnected narrative climax. The anticipation for the Infinity War trailer was palpable even then, to which Feige playfully responded, “Someday. Someday. Yeah.” — a classic Marvel tease that only heightened the excitement.

The Evolution of Thor: Embracing New Directions in Ragnarok
One of the most striking aspects of Thor: Ragnarok was its radical departure in tone and aesthetic from its predecessors. This bold creative shift was a deliberate choice, as Feige explained:
Why does this Thor have such a different look and feel?
Kevin Feige: “That was our initial idea, then perfected and dramatically improved by the brilliant Taika Waititi. As we always strive to do with our third films in a series, we wanted to go to a completely new, unexpected place. Look at what we accomplished with Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, or the third Captain America film, Civil War. We consistently view a third installment – or in the case of Avengers, Infinity War – as a golden opportunity to take what fans already love, what they’ve invested in, and then transport them to a totally unexpected, yet incredibly fun, new realm of storytelling.”
Feige also acknowledged the pivotal role of Chris Hemsworth in shaping this new direction for Thor, revealing a humorous anecdote:
Kevin Feige: “Also, Chris Hemsworth – and if you talk to him, he’ll probably mention this – used to jokingly say, ‘Hey mate, Captain America has Iron Man in his movie, he’s got Black Widow in his movie, who am I getting?’ And I’d go, ‘Ha. Oh, I know, ha,’ and then inwardly I’d think, ‘I think he’s right. I think he’s absolutely right.’ The great thing about Thor is that he has an incredible roster of characters in his own comic mythology, like Hela and Valkyrie, who we knew we wanted to bring to life on screen.”
Beyond introducing iconic characters from Thor’s comic lore, the creative team looked to other corners of the MCU to shake things up. Feige elaborated on the inspired decision to pair Thor with another fan-favorite Avenger:
Kevin Feige: “Very quickly, we realized that the Hulk would be the perfect character to bring into Thor’s world. While seeing Thor and Hulk battle it out is undeniably great, seeing Banner and Thor truly be ‘fish out of water’ together is even better. This created an amazing dynamic between them. So, we decided, well, I guess Hulk, when we last saw him heading up into the atmosphere in a Quinjet, just kept going. He got caught in a wormhole and eventually ended up on the gladiatorial planet of Sakaar, setting the stage for their unexpected reunion.”
This creative alchemy, combining Taika Waititi’s distinctive comedic voice with a deeper exploration of Thor’s mythology and the clever inclusion of Hulk, fundamentally redefined the character and the film series. The result was a vibrant, often hilarious, and surprisingly emotional journey that resonated deeply with both critics and audiences, cementing Thor: Ragnarok as one of the MCU’s most beloved entries.

Thor: Ragnarok: The Story and Stellar Cast
Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok catapulted audiences into an exhilarating, universe-spanning adventure. Stripped of his iconic hammer, Mjolnir, Thor finds himself unjustly imprisoned on the other side of the cosmos. His quest becomes a desperate race against time to return to his beloved Asgard and avert Ragnarok – the prophesied destruction of his homeworld and the ultimate end of Asgardian civilization. This catastrophic event is orchestrated by an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless and formidable Hela, Goddess of Death. But before he can even begin to contend with Hela, Thor must first survive a deadly gladiatorial contest. This brutal trial pits him against an unexpected adversary: his former ally and fellow Avenger, the Incredible Hulk, leading to one of the most anticipated confrontations in MCU history.
The film, masterfully directed by the visionary Taika Waititi, brought back beloved stars and introduced compelling new faces. Chris Hemsworth reprised his role as the God of Thunder with newfound comedic flair, while Tom Hiddleston delivered another captivating performance as the mischievous Loki. They were joined by an exceptional ensemble cast that included Cate Blanchett as the terrifying Hela, Idris Elba as the steadfast Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum as the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson as the fierce Valkyrie, and Karl Urban as the menacing Skurge. Mark Ruffalo returned as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, and Anthony Hopkins brought gravitas once more as Odin.
Kevin Feige served as the primary producer, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Thomas M. Hammel, and the legendary Stan Lee contributing as executive producers. The engaging screenplay was crafted by Eric Pearson, alongside Craig Kyle & Christopher L. Yost, ensuring a narrative rich in action, humor, and heart. Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok thundered into U.S. theaters on November 3, 2017, leaving an indelible mark on the superhero genre and setting a new benchmark for character reinvention within a sprawling cinematic universe.
