Kevin Feige: “It’s pretty awesome, and I particularly love that little Peter Parker, still in high school, is right in the middle of all that cosmic action. It’s incredibly cool, and it really underscores what I’ve always wanted people to understand: just because something is based on a comic doesn’t mean they’re all cut from the same cloth. It doesn’t mean they all inhabit the same exact tonal world. These were our three major film releases this year, and I always knew, and certainly hoped, they would be profoundly exciting and offer diverse experiences for our audience.”

Kevin Feige: “Yes, and it comes out in May of next year.”

Is it going to be a major set up or merely a cameo?

Kevin Feige: “No, Infinity War is truly a comprehensive meeting of those minds, and Thor, in particular, will spend significant time with the Guardians. We’ve already shot some incredibly fun scenes between them. The cosmic adventurers are going to spend a lot of time together in that movie, which I think audiences will absolutely adore.”

The scale of production for such an ambitious project was immense, and Feige provided an update on the rigorous filming schedule:

Is that filming in Atlanta?

Kevin Feige: “We have actually finished filming Avengers: Infinity War. They are currently deep into production for the Untitled Avengers sequel. Our production for these massive films started in January of this year and will continue nonstop through January of next year. Black Panther has started and finished its principal photography, and Ant-Man and The Wasp have started and are almost finished while all of that larger Avengers production has been ongoing. It’s a relentless, but incredibly rewarding, process.”

Why does this Thor have such a different look and feel?

Kevin Feige: “That was our initial idea, then perfected and dramatically improved by the brilliant Taika Waititi. As we always strive to do with our third films in a series, we wanted to go to a completely new, unexpected place. Look at what we accomplished with Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, or the third Captain America film, Civil War. We consistently view a third installment – or in the case of Avengers, Infinity War – as a golden opportunity to take what fans already love, what they’ve invested in, and then transport them to a totally unexpected, yet incredibly fun, new realm of storytelling.”

Feige also acknowledged the pivotal role of Chris Hemsworth in shaping this new direction for Thor, revealing a humorous anecdote:

Kevin Feige: “Also, Chris Hemsworth – and if you talk to him, he’ll probably mention this – used to jokingly say, ‘Hey mate, Captain America has Iron Man in his movie, he’s got Black Widow in his movie, who am I getting?’ And I’d go, ‘Ha. Oh, I know, ha,’ and then inwardly I’d think, ‘I think he’s right. I think he’s absolutely right.’ The great thing about Thor is that he has an incredible roster of characters in his own comic mythology, like Hela and Valkyrie, who we knew we wanted to bring to life on screen.”

Beyond introducing iconic characters from Thor’s comic lore, the creative team looked to other corners of the MCU to shake things up. Feige elaborated on the inspired decision to pair Thor with another fan-favorite Avenger:

Kevin Feige: “Very quickly, we realized that the Hulk would be the perfect character to bring into Thor’s world. While seeing Thor and Hulk battle it out is undeniably great, seeing Banner and Thor truly be ‘fish out of water’ together is even better. This created an amazing dynamic between them. So, we decided, well, I guess Hulk, when we last saw him heading up into the atmosphere in a Quinjet, just kept going. He got caught in a wormhole and eventually ended up on the gladiatorial planet of Sakaar, setting the stage for their unexpected reunion.”

This creative alchemy, combining Taika Waititi’s distinctive comedic voice with a deeper exploration of Thor’s mythology and the clever inclusion of Hulk, fundamentally redefined the character and the film series.
