Imagine our delightful surprise upon arriving in Český Krumlov and instantly falling head over heels for this picturesque town. While we regretfully missed the opportunity to take an interior tour of the magnificent Český Krumlov Castle – as it closes for tours from November 1st until the end of March – its exterior grandeur and commanding presence over the town were a sight to behold. Despite the castle tour being off-limits, the town center itself offered an abundance of historical wonders and vibrant life.
From the central square, with its delightful mix of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, you can effortlessly discover a quaint restaurant serving hearty Czech cuisine, browse shops for exquisite Bohemian crystals and local wines, or simply immerse yourself in the city’s captivating ambiance. The vibrant hues of the buildings and the gentle murmur of the Vltava River create a tranquil yet engaging atmosphere, inviting visitors to slow down and savor every moment.
Our knowledgeable Viking River guide led us to a fantastic overlook, just a block or two from the bustling town center. From this vantage point, we were treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the castle complex majestically perched above the meandering river and the terracotta rooftops of the town below. While we didn’t manage to spot them during our single day in Český Krumlov, some fellow travelers did catch a quick glimpse. It’s certainly an unexpected sight; when one typically imagines a castle moat, it’s usually filled with water, not magnificent bears!

Navigating the charming streets and alleyways of Český Krumlov is an experience in itself. Be prepared for cobblestones! These historic pathways, though beautiful and authentic, are uneven and can be challenging for inappropriate footwear. A crucial tip for any visitor is to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes – think sneakers, hiking sandals, or sturdy boots – to comfortably manage the ancient stones. I even wore my favorite Birkenstocks, which, even in November, provided the comfort and support needed for hours of exploration.
Our exploration led us to a truly delightful restaurant nestled along the river, perfectly situated beneath the towering castle walls. Here, my husband John savored a delicious bowl of lentil and sausage soup, followed by a classic beef goulash. He declared both dishes so incredibly good that he was tempted to lick the bowl clean – a testament to the rich and satisfying flavors of traditional Czech cuisine, though he wisely refrained under my watchful eye!

For Christmas Eve dinner, many residents of the Czech Republic prepare carp and potatoes. The most intriguing part?
