Before embarking on our unforgettable Viking River Cruise along the Danube Waltz, if I’m being completely honest, the name Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic meant very little to me. My perception of the Czech Republic was primarily shaped by glowing recommendations of Prague, a city I had long yearned to visit. Little did I know, an even more enchanting discovery awaited us, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Bohemia.

Discovering the Fairytale Charm of Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
Imagine our delightful surprise upon arriving in Český Krumlov and instantly falling head over heels for this picturesque town. It felt like stepping directly into a living fairytale, a sentiment that quickly overshadowed any prior expectations. One of the many wonderful aspects of traveling with a Viking River Cruise is the convenience of included daily excursions, designed to enrich your journey and introduce you to captivating destinations.
On this particular day, we opted for the “gentle tour.” These tours are thoughtfully curated for guests who prefer a more relaxed pace, allowing ample time to soak in the sights without the rush of more strenuous walking tours. This proved to be the perfect choice for us, as it afforded us the luxury of leisurely strolling into the town, camera in hand, capturing hundreds of photos of its undeniable beauty.
Once we reached the heart of Český Krumlov, we had the freedom to wander at our own pace, exploring the labyrinthine alleyways and charming small streets. Every turn revealed another postcard-perfect scene, from the vibrantly colored Renaissance buildings to the serene Vltava River winding its way around the town. The air was crisp, the sky a brilliant blue, and the autumn leaves added a warm, golden glow to the historic facades – truly perfect weather for November exploration.

The Enchanting UNESCO World Heritage Site
Český Krumlov is, without exaggeration, an absolutely gorgeous city. It’s easy to find yourself pausing every few feet, compelled to take another picture, such is its pervasive beauty. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the town’s historical significance and well-preserved architecture are a testament to its unique charm. While we regretfully missed the opportunity to take an interior tour of the magnificent Český Krumlov Castle – as it closes for tours from November 1st until the end of March – its exterior grandeur and commanding presence over the town were a sight to behold. Despite the castle tour being off-limits, the town center itself offered an abundance of historical wonders and vibrant life.

From the central square, with its delightful mix of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, you can effortlessly discover a quaint restaurant serving hearty Czech cuisine, browse shops for exquisite Bohemian crystals and local wines, or simply immerse yourself in the city’s captivating ambiance. The vibrant hues of the buildings and the gentle murmur of the Vltava River create a tranquil yet engaging atmosphere, inviting visitors to slow down and savor every moment.
Our knowledgeable Viking River guide led us to a fantastic overlook, just a block or two from the bustling town center. From this vantage point, we were treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the castle complex majestically perched above the meandering river and the terracotta rooftops of the town below. It was an unforgettable perspective, perfectly encapsulating the magic of Český Krumlov.

The Unique Český Krumlov Castle and Its Bear Moat
The Český Krumlov Castle complex is truly immense, stretching for an impressive one kilometer in length. It’s not just a single building but a vast collection of palaces, courtyards, and gardens that tell centuries of stories. For those visiting outside of the winter closure period (November 1st to the end of March), a tour inside the castle offers a glimpse into its opulent interiors, showcasing magnificent artwork, intricate designs, and historical artifacts that transport you back in time.
One of the castle’s most intriguing and unique features, which has firmly landed on our must-visit list for our next trip, is the bear moat. Yes, you read that correctly – a moat with bears! This centuries-old tradition involves live brown bears residing in the moat around the castle. While we didn’t manage to spot them during our single day in Český Krumlov, some fellow travelers did catch a quick glimpse. It’s certainly an unexpected sight; when one typically imagines a castle moat, it’s usually filled with water, not magnificent bears!

Exploring the Town: Culinary Delights and Practical Tips
Navigating the charming streets and alleyways of Český Krumlov is an experience in itself. Be prepared for cobblestones! These historic pathways, though beautiful and authentic, are uneven and can be challenging for inappropriate footwear. A crucial tip for any visitor is to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes – think sneakers, hiking sandals, or sturdy boots – to comfortably manage the ancient stones. I even wore my favorite Birkenstocks, which, even in November, provided the comfort and support needed for hours of exploration.
Our exploration led us to a truly delightful restaurant nestled along the river, perfectly situated beneath the towering castle walls. Here, my husband John savored a delicious bowl of lentil and sausage soup, followed by a classic beef goulash. He declared both dishes so incredibly good that he was tempted to lick the bowl clean – a testament to the rich and satisfying flavors of traditional Czech cuisine, though he wisely refrained under my watchful eye!

Beyond the culinary delights, Český Krumlov offers a unique shopping experience. The town is renowned for its crystal wares, ranging from exquisite Swarovski pieces to beautiful locally crafted crystals. I happily found some wonderfully unique crystal jewelry at a shop in the heart of the city. Of course, you’ll also find the usual array of charming souvenirs typical of popular tourist destinations, perfect for bringing a piece of Český Krumlov home with you.
A Glimpse into Czech Traditions: The Christmas Carp
Our Viking River Cruise guide shared a fascinating local Christmas tradition that truly captured our imagination. For Christmas Eve dinner, many residents of the Czech Republic prepare carp and potatoes. The most intriguing part? Families often purchase a live carp a few days before Christmas and keep it in their bathtub, primarily to entertain their children! Our guide recounted with a giggle how this means no one can shower until the carp has made its way from the tub to the dinner table – an amusing, if slightly inconvenient, family ritual. For Christmas Day, the meal typically shifts to goose or turkey, accompanied by a delectable spread of Linzer cakes and various festive cookies. Our guide proudly mentioned making an average of fifteen different cakes for her family each year, often sharing these sweet treats with local retirement homes to spread holiday joy. These personal anecdotes provided a wonderful insight into the warmth and unique customs of the Czech people.

Plan Your Czech Republic Adventure
Our unexpected discovery of Český Krumlov was undoubtedly a highlight of our Danube Waltz cruise. This captivating town, with its rich history, stunning architecture, unique traditions, and welcoming atmosphere, is far more than just a stop along the river – it’s a destination that truly captures the heart. We highly recommend adding Český Krumlov to your European travel itinerary, whether as part of a river cruise or a dedicated trip to the Czech Republic. It’s a fairytale come to life, waiting to be explored.
