Crafting the Ultimate Boozy Frozen Hot Chocolate
My recent journey back to Washington D.C., after an absence of over three decades since an 8th-grade spring break, was nothing short of a delightful revelation. The city, brimming with history and vibrant energy, felt both familiar and entirely new. This incredible opportunity arose when American Heritage Chocolate extended an invitation for a weekend of historical exploration and, of course, chocolate!
The allure was irresistible: the chance to immerse myself in US history, discover new facets of a city I barely remembered, and experience it all through the lens of premium chocolate. Traveling from the West Coast, I arrived on Friday night, a fortunate early start that gifted me an entire Saturday morning to explore independently. I wasted no time, clocking over 18,000 steps by 11 AM – a testament to the city’s walkable charm and my eagerness to take it all in.
My spontaneous tour began with a brisk walk from the elegant Monaco Washington D.C. hotel to the iconic Washington Monument. From there, I continued down the historic National Mall, arriving at the serene Lincoln Memorial. The sheer density of monumental landmarks within such close proximity is truly astonishing, offering a profound sense of American history with every step. One could easily spend a week wandering Washington D.C.’s hallowed grounds and still not uncover all its treasures. Despite a slight ache in my feet, every single step was undeniably worth it.
Beyond the historic sites, the weekend offered a cherished personal connection: a long-overdue reunion with a college friend I hadn’t seen in over a decade. We reconnected over a leisurely brunch, catching up on life’s chapters. She now calls D.C. home, and I eagerly anticipate my next visit to explore more of the city through her eyes.

The official American Heritage Chocolate event commenced on Saturday afternoon and proved to be an unforgettable experience. Our journey into history began at the revered National Archives, where we participated in a captivating history lesson followed by an interactive chocolate class. The National Archives Foundation generously provided us with a guided tour of the building before settling us into a conference room for the culinary demonstration.
It was a truly unique privilege to be part of what we believed was the first-ever chocolate class hosted within the hallowed halls of the National Archives. The security guards, drawn in by the irresistible aroma, frequently popped in to comment on the delicious scent of chocolate wafting through the building. This immersive experience highlighted the deep historical roots of chocolate in America, a fact many might not fully appreciate.
Discovering American Heritage Chocolate
During our session, we learned fascinating details about American Heritage Chocolate:
- American Heritage Chocolate is more than just a sweet treat; it’s an authentic historic product line, meticulously developed from 18th-century chocolate recipes. It celebrates chocolate’s significant role in the lives of early Americans and offers a taste reminiscent of what figures like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Ben Franklin would have enjoyed. It combines all-natural ingredients with exotic spices, providing a truly historical flavor profile.
- Crafted with only natural ingredients and absolutely no preservatives, American Heritage Chocolate is a rich, artisanal dark chocolate with a substantial 63% cacao content, ensuring a deep and satisfying chocolate experience.
- Its distinctive flavor profile is mildly spicy and subtly sweet, infused with a carefully selected blend of spices and ingredients that were readily available during colonial times. These include cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of chili pepper, orange, anise, and vanilla, creating a complex and intriguing taste.
- Committed to inclusivity, American Heritage Chocolate is Kosher-certified and made without dairy, wheat, peanuts, or tree nuts. Furthermore, it is produced in a dedicated facility that is free from peanuts and tree nuts, making it a safe option for many with dietary restrictions.
During our hands-on baking class, we crafted delectable American Heritage Chocolate buckeyes (a recipe I promise to share soon!) and a delightful frozen hot chocolate drink that was simply divine. As I sipped the chilled chocolate, one thought consumed me: how incredible it would be with a touch of Kahlua or Irish cream. The inspiration for this boozy rendition was further fueled by the National Archives’ “Spirited Republic” exhibit, which explored the role of alcohol throughout U.S. history, including the Prohibition era. It seemed only fitting to add a little ‘spirit’ to our historical chocolate creation.
So, upon returning home, the first order of business was to recreate that wonderful frozen hot chocolate, this time infusing it with a carefully selected alcoholic kick using American Heritage Chocolate. The result was pure bliss.

A Deep Dive into the National Archives
Our visit to the National Archives was far more enlightening than anticipated. We discovered its immense research center, a veritable treasure trove for genealogy enthusiasts, showcasing the incredible depth of records available for public exploration. It was eye-opening to see the types of documents and stories one could uncover within its walls, connecting families to their past.
A particularly astounding revelation was learning that every patent ever issued in the U.S. is meticulously housed at the Archives. Before this trip, I had no concept of the sheer volume of history entrusted to the American people through this institution. The National Archives safeguards approximately:
- 10 billion pages of textual records
- 12 million maps, charts, and drawings
- 25 million still photographs and graphics
- 24 million aerial photographs
- 300,000 reels of motion picture film
- 400,000 video and sound recordings
- 133 terabytes of electronic data
The scale of these holdings is truly mind-boggling, representing countless pieces of our collective history, meticulously preserved for future generations to explore and appreciate. To think that so much invaluable information is not hidden away but actively maintained and shared is a profound comfort and a testament to our nation’s commitment to its past.
Following our inspiring baking demonstration and informative session on the National Archives, we indulged in a magnificent Italian feast at Carmine’s. Despite being thoroughly filled with chocolate, we miraculously found room for their exquisite pasta and bread. I still dream of their potato gnocchi with its decadent cream sauce – a true culinary highlight!
Sunday morning brought us back to the National Archives for an early private tour of the building. This exclusive opportunity allowed us to witness the Charters of Freedom firsthand – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Standing before these foundational documents of American democracy was an incredibly moving experience, offering a tangible connection to the origins of our nation.

Within the “Spirited Republic” exhibit, we encountered the poignant story of Daisy Simpson. Daisy was an exceptionally effective prohibition agent in 1921 until a policy change in San Francisco abruptly barred women from serving in such roles. Daisy Simpson’s record as an agent was exemplary, marked by clever tactics such as feigning a faint outside speakeasies. Once carried inside and offered a drink for recovery, she would reveal her badge and shut down the illegal establishment.
Tragically, her story does not end with deserved accolades. After losing her meaningful career due to gender discrimination, Daisy fell into a deep depression, eventually succumbing to alcoholism and facing imprisonment. Her despair over being unable to continue her work as an agent ultimately led to her suicide. This powerful narrative is just one of countless human stories preserved within the National Archives. While heartbreaking, Daisy’s experience also serves as a stark reminder of the immense progress our country has made in terms of gender equality and opportunities over the past century. Walking through the exhibits, one truly witnesses history unfold, from immigration struggles to the complexities of prohibition, and so much more.
My visit ignited a newfound passion for history, something I largely overlooked in my younger years. As an adult, I find it utterly captivating that we still possess documents dating back 800 years, displayed openly for all to see. These invaluable artifacts are not confined to hidden warehouses but are proudly showcased at the National Archives, allowing every American to connect with and appreciate even a small piece of our shared heritage. I eagerly anticipate returning to spend at least a day or two simply wandering and absorbing the vast richness of the National Archives.
As if the private tour of the National Archives wasn’t enough to make for an extraordinary weekend in Washington D.C., American Heritage Chocolate also arranged a comprehensive three-hour driving tour of the city with Washington Signature Tours. If you’re planning a trip to D.C., I cannot recommend Washington Signature Tours enough, and specifically, ask for Dwayne! He is an absolute walking encyclopedia of the city and its sites. I learned more from him in three hours than I probably absorbed throughout all of high school history classes combined. Dwayne’s profound love for the city and his ability to weave compelling historical narratives around every corner made the experience truly unforgettable.

Our tour began at the magnificent U.S. Capitol Building, which was undergoing significant renovations. These essential works are designed to preserve its grandeur and structural integrity, ensuring it remains an awe-inspiring symbol for the next century. From the Capitol, we traveled along the National Mall, learning fascinating facts about the various Smithsonian museums dotting the landscape. While we sadly didn’t have time to visit any museums on this trip, it’s certainly a top priority for my next visit.
We covered an incredible amount of ground and witnessed so many amazing sites in Washington D.C. within a remarkably short period. I have countless photos and stories to share, so keep an eye out for upcoming posts detailing the National Archives, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and more. I’m carefully spacing out these articles to avoid overwhelming you with the sheer volume of historical insights and beautiful imagery I captured.
Adding another layer of expertise to our chocolate-filled weekend, American Heritage Chocolate brought in Jennifer from Dove Chocolate Discoveries. Jennifer’s session was truly exceptional, providing us with invaluable insights and practical tips on working with chocolate, further deepening our appreciation for this versatile ingredient.
