Discovering the Best Restaurants in Reno, NV: A Foodie’s Guide

Ask any local, and they’ll proudly share their go-to dining spots. Reno has truly blossomed into a foodie destination, boasting unique dishes designed to tantalize every palate. Imagine indulging in a creative mac and cheese pizza, or perhaps a decadent banana, Nutella, and peanut butter fluff sandwich. The city’s culinary offerings are as diverse as they are delicious, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving.

Our journey through Reno’s vibrant dining scene is driven by a genuine passion for exceptional food. The majority of the restaurants featured in this guide were visited anonymously, allowing us to experience them as any other guest would. This approach ensures our recommendations are based on authentic dining experiences, reflecting the quality and service you can expect on your own visit.

Occasionally, we participate in press events where our visit is known, but these instances are rare. Our primary goal is to curate a list of truly outstanding Reno restaurants, ensuring that when you choose one of our recommendations, you’re guaranteed a memorable and enjoyable meal. We partner with the Reno Tahoe Visitor Bureau to highlight the incredible attractions and experiences in the area, but rest assured, all opinions expressed here are our own, born from genuine appreciation for the local gems.

If we encounter a less-than-stellar experience, be it subpar food or unusual service, we simply omit that establishment from our list. Our commitment is to ensure you spend your hard-earned money on nothing but the best. Thankfully, such instances are infrequent in Reno. On the rare occasion we have a “funky” dining experience, we often hear it was an anomaly, and we make an effort to revisit to confirm if it was truly an off day or if the restaurant simply doesn’t meet our high standards.

For those starting their day with a hearty meal, don’t miss our comprehensive guide to the best breakfast spots in Reno. And if you’re a craft beer enthusiast, our Reno Brewery Guide offers a fantastic tour of the local brewing scene.

Exquisite eggs benedict served alongside perfectly cooked home fries on a pristine white plate

Two Chicks

What began as a popular grilled cheese food truck has blossomed into Two Chicks, a beloved Midtown restaurant renowned for its creative and comforting dishes. This spot is a breakfast and brunch aficionado’s dream, offering unique twists on classic favorites. Imagine Pancake Dippers King Style, served with bananas, crispy bacon, and a delectable peanut butter dipping sauce. Or perhaps “The Bumble Brie” sandwich, a sophisticated blend of brie cheese, crisp green apples, and local honey, all nestled between slices of cinnamon raisin bread.

One of my personal favorites, the Caprese Eggs Benedict, is an absolute revelation – a burst of fresh flavors that elevates a brunch staple. For those with a sweet tooth, the “Simply Sinful” sandwich is a must-try: Nutella, peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, and bananas on white bread. Insider tip: rumor has it there’s a secret menu item featuring Simply Sinful served atop sweet potato fries – a truly adventurous treat! Their breakfast benedicts are legendary and worth every moment of the wait. On weekends, lines can extend to an hour, so our best advice is to put your name on the list, then take a short, pleasant stroll down the street to Perenn Bakery for a pre-brunch coffee and perhaps a croissant to tide you over.

Exploring South Reno and Sparks: Beyond the City Center

While our focus often lies on locally-owned establishments, there are a couple of well-loved spots in South Reno and Sparks that deserve a mention for their consistent quality and popularity. These areas offer their own unique dining appeal, from family-friendly chains to unique local breweries.

Popular Chains Worth Mentioning

It’s hard to talk about popular casual dining without mentioning In-N-Out Burger. For West Coast enthusiasts, the good news is that Reno boasts two locations – one conveniently located in South Reno off Virginia Street, and another in Sparks, making it easy to grab a classic Animal Style burger and fries. Another highly recommended chain is Black Bear Diner, a West Coast franchise famous for its enormous portions of consistently delicious, homestyle comfort food. Their commitment to great customer service and their iconic bear statues (perfect for a photo op!) make them a reliable choice for a hearty meal. There’s also a Black Bear Diner location in Sparks, ensuring plenty of opportunities to enjoy their generous offerings.

Great Basin Brewery and Restaurant

Great Basin Brewery and Restaurant is a cornerstone of the Reno dining scene, offering an experience that caters to all tastes, with a few delightful surprises thrown in. While renowned for its excellent craft beers, particularly their signature “Icky” IPA, the food menu is equally impressive and innovative. You absolutely must try the “Mac Attack Pizza,” a gloriously indulgent creation featuring creamy macaroni and cheese generously spread over a pizza crust, topped with crispy bacon. It’s an unexpectedly delicious fusion that has garnered a loyal following. Beyond the pizza, their “cheese bread” is far from ordinary – it’s an elevated, gooey, and intensely flavorful starter that exceeds all expectations.

A magnificent cheese-covered bread loaf, next to olive oil and a glass of refreshing beer

Let’s talk more about the “Molten Cheese Lava Loaf” because it truly deserves special mention. This is not just cheese bread; it’s a glorious, bubbling bowl of cheesy goodness that you simply cannot miss. Served in a house-made “Icky Bread” bowl, it’s filled to the brim with a creamy cheddar beer cheese sauce, then baked to perfection with a crust of provolone and parmesan. Oh, hello yum! Grab your significant other, your closest friends, or even head to Great Basin on your own – just to experience the ooey-gooey, epic deliciousness that is this cheesy bread bowl. It’s an unforgettable appetizer that embodies comfort food at its finest.

And if you’re thinking of a simple grilled cheese, prepare to be surprised. Their grilled cheese sandwich is a gourmet affair: parmesan-crusted “Icky Bread” filled with a blend of Swiss, cheddar, smoked provolone, pepper jack, and mozzarella cheese, enhanced with crispy hardwood smoked bacon and roasted tomatoes. It’s a sophisticated take on a childhood favorite, perfectly paired with one of their celebrated craft brews.

Delicious pizza adorned with fresh tomatoes, fragrant basil, and savory olives

Smiling with Hope Pizza

I cannot emphasize this enough: You NEED to go to Smiling With Hope Pizza! This is not just a recommendation; it’s an imperative. It’s arguably the best pizza in Reno, and quite possibly one of the top three pizzas we’ve ever tasted anywhere in the world. But beyond the incredible food, this restaurant embodies a truly inspiring mission that makes the dining experience even more special.

Smiling With Hope Pizza’s profound mission is to foster hope and create meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities. An impressive 30% of their staff are individuals with disabilities, contributing to a vibrant and inclusive work environment. Owner Walter, with his decades of expertise, personally hand-stretches each pizza, which is then baked to perfection on pizza stones in authentic 1960s gas deck ovens. This meticulous dedication to craft and quality results in pizzas that are nothing short of extraordinary – a crispy, chewy crust, rich sauce, and perfectly melted cheese that will transport you straight to Naples or New York.

And while the pizza is stellar, do not, under any circumstances, leave without ordering at least one cannoli! These are made using Walter’s grandmother’s cherished recipe from Italy, and they are so incredibly good, you’ll be tempted to keep them all to yourself. A crucial detail to note for planning your visit: the restaurant is only open from 4 pm to 8 pm, so plan accordingly to ensure you don’t miss out on this culinary and community gem.

Smiling With Hope Pizza has earned a multitude of prestigious awards, solidifying its reputation:
