Pre-Cruise Preparations: Anticipation Builds for Our Alaskan Adventure
There’s an undeniable thrill that comes with preparing for a new cruise, especially when it’s an Alaska cruise! The anticipation of embarking on a fresh journey, exploring new landscapes, and creating lasting memories is truly exhilarating. For us, this trip held extra significance as it was our inaugural voyage with Holland America Line. While we had the pleasure of touring the Holland America Westerdam a few years prior, experiencing their legendary service and amenities firsthand was a highly anticipated first.
In the days leading up to our departure, essential pre-cruise steps included a COVID-19 test, with negative results required for boarding. We found the Abbot e-med tests, conveniently conducted at home with phone supervision, to be incredibly efficient. Receiving that clear result always provides immense peace of mind, signaling that our Alaska cruise vacation was truly on the horizon.
Packing for an Alaska cruise is a carefully considered process, even in the height of summer. While our home in Spokane might be enjoying warm July sunshine, Alaska’s climate is famously unpredictable. Our experience from previous Alaska cruises has taught us to be prepared for every conceivable weather scenario. One moment could bring brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures, while the next might usher in cold winds and pouring rain. Digging out our winter gear, often optimistically stored away, became a familiar ritual – a testament to Alaska’s unique charm.
This particular 7-day Alaska cruise came about through a spontaneous discovery of an incredible last-minute deal, coupled with an absolutely perfect itinerary. Although this voyage didn’t include a visit to the iconic Tracy Arm Fjord, we were more than content, as any opportunity to explore the majestic Glacier Bay National Park is a dream come true for us. A significant highlight was the prospect of visiting new-to-us Alaskan destinations: Icy Strait Point and Sitka, with particular excitement for delving into the history and beauty of Sitka National Historical Park. This Holland America Alaska cruise was a much-needed escape, promising abundant wildlife sightings, particularly whales, and endless opportunities to unwind amidst the breathtaking natural grandeur of the Inside Passage.

Day 1: Embarkation Day in Seattle, Washington – A Smooth Start to Our Alaska Cruise
Our departure from Seattle was scheduled for 3:00 PM, with our boarding time set for 1:00 PM. This allowed for a leisurely morning at our hotel in Issaquah before making the short drive to the Seattle port. Parking at the port was exceptionally easy, aided by a friendly attendant who guided us through the process. We paid for the entire 7-day duration upon arrival and then boarded a complimentary shuttle that whisked us directly to the cruise terminal.
Upon reaching the terminal, we were met with a significant line, a common sight during embarkation. However, we noticed the staff were attentive to guests with mobility restrictions, offering assistance to ensure a smoother process. A crucial tip for future cruisers: if you have the option to use Verifly with Holland America, do so! We regrettably missed the deadline, but observed that guests with confirmed Verifly information bypassed the main queue entirely, a truly impressive efficiency. After navigating the health screening and security checkpoints, boarding the ms Eurodam was remarkably quick and easy.
Arriving at around 2 PM proved to be an unexpected advantage; we were able to proceed directly to our stateroom. Our balcony stateroom on Deck 10, situated at the ship’s front, offered a perfect retreat to settle in, take a deep breath, and fully embrace the start of our Alaska cruise adventure.

Muster drills have undergone a positive transformation in recent years. Now, instead of crowded assemblies, guests simply watch a safety video in their stateroom and then visit their assigned muster station for a quick demonstration on life jacket usage and location confirmation. This streamlined approach is a welcome change, making the process quick, easy, and allowing more time to enjoy the start of the cruise vacation.

Our primary goal for this Holland America Alaska cruise was pure relaxation. We decided on a super chill evening, opting for New York Pizza from the Lido deck, complemented by a visit to the extensive Lido buffet for a late lunch/early dinner. The salad bar on the Eurodam truly impressed us – it was expansive, offering an incredible variety of fresh options. Unlike many cruise lines, the salad bowls provided were generously sized, allowing for a truly epic and satisfying salad, a perfect fresh counterpoint to our pizza. A minor note for plus-size guests: many chairs in the Lido deck dining areas feature armrests that may limit comfort. You might need to explore a bit further to find bench seating or areas with more accommodating chairs.

After a satisfying meal, we retreated to our stateroom to unpack and soak in the mesmerizing views from our private balcony as we departed Seattle. The panoramic vistas of the city and its surroundings are always a favorite part of setting sail. A thoughtful touch from Holland America: deck blankets were provided, allowing us to cozy up and fully enjoy the crisp evening air on our balcony.

Day 2: A Relaxing Sea Day & Unforeseen Seasickness on Our Alaska Cruise
We began our first full day at sea with an early morning visit to the main dining room for breakfast. My anticipation for their famous eggs benedict was high, and I’m delighted to report it did not disappoint. Each perfectly poached egg and savory component was a true culinary delight – simply delicious!

As the ms Eurodam made its way north toward Alaska, the seas grew a bit rougher. For the very first time in over twenty cruises, I found myself battling seasickness, which significantly impacted my enjoyment for most of the day. What began as a planned sea day of exploration quickly transformed into a cozy movie day curled up in our stateroom. My only brief excursion from the room was a successful mission to the Dive In burger restaurant for a comforting veggie burger.
Experiencing seasickness was far from enjoyable, and it served as a valuable reminder: always pack essential remedies like seasickness bands or anti-nausea medication, even if you’ve never needed them before. A good life lesson learned! One aspect of the Holland America Eurodam that truly impressed us during this unexpected downtime was the vast, complimentary selection of on-demand movies available in the stateroom. We discovered recent releases that had only been in theaters a couple of months prior, providing excellent entertainment.

Our day ended with four captivating movies and a delightful room service dinner. If you ever book a Holland America cruise, a non-negotiable item on your to-do list must be to order the chocolate chip cookies from room service. I’ll confess to calling in a second order immediately after the first batch arrived – they are, without a doubt, the finest chocolate chip cookies we’ve ever tasted on any cruise line. A true highlight!

Day 3: Exploring Juneau, Alaska – Whales, Trams, and Stunning Vistas
Arrive: 1:00 PMÂ Depart: 10:00 PM
After a full day of napping and movies at sea, we woke up early, refreshed and ready to embrace the day. Our first stop was the Pinnacle Bar on Deck 2, which proved to be an unexpected gem. Before the main dining room even opened, we enjoyed expertly crafted coffee and what I can confidently say was the best chai tea latte I’ve ever had on any ship. The presentation, the exquisite flavor, and the truly amazing staff made it an unforgettable experience. This quickly became our preferred morning ritual. As an added bonus, the talented barista brought us a small plate of delightful pastries: a chocolate breakfast pastry, a croissant, and biscotti. My husband swiftly claimed the chocolate pastry, declaring it divine!

Breakfast in the main dining room is always a calmer, more refined way to start the day compared to the bustling Lido buffet, and the food quality is consistently outstanding. This morning, we were fortunate to secure a table at the very back of the ship, right by the windows. As we savored another perfectly prepared eggs benedict, we had our first humpback whale sighting of the cruise! It was an incredible moment – enjoying delicious food, spotting majestic wildlife, and taking in the stunning views as the ship sailed through calm waters towards Juneau.

Given our previous visits to Mendenhall Glacier, we decided to book one of our absolute favorite shore excursions: the Juneau Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest. We’ve experienced both small boat tours and the larger Allen Marine vessels, finding the latter often more comfortable. Despite the rainy weather, the whale watching tour was phenomenal. Within mere minutes of setting sail, we spotted our first humpback whale in the distance, and from that point on, it felt as though we were surrounded by these magnificent creatures, surfacing in every direction.

One aspect we particularly appreciate about this excursion is the onboard naturalist, who offers fascinating insights into the whales’ behavior and their presence in Alaskan waters. We learned that humpbacks rarely breach in Alaska, as this is primarily a mating activity, more common in warmer waters like Hawaii or Mexico. Any breaching observed here is typically performed by playful juveniles. We were incredibly lucky to have several whales approach our boat quite closely, providing unparalleled opportunities for photos and videos. The collective “oohs” and “aahs” from fellow passengers as the whales swam by and then dramatically showed their tails were truly heartwarming.

After our exhilarating whale watching tour, we returned to Juneau and finally took the opportunity to ride the Mount Roberts Tramway. Our Holland America ship was conveniently docked right next to the tram’s entrance, almost as if it were a sign. I can wholeheartedly say it was worth every penny! The brief ride up provides spectacular panoramic views of Gastineau Channel and Juneau. At the summit, visitors can enjoy a wonderful restaurant, a raptor center featuring Lady Baltimore (a rescued Bald Eagle), totem carving demonstrations, an excellent gift shop, and numerous hiking trails.

We enjoyed dinner at the restaurant, where my husband raved about the halibut and chips – a generous portion that tasted incredibly fresh. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, encompassing the entire landscape. We hope that on our next Alaska cruise, the weather will be clearer, allowing us to explore more of the nature trails and truly immerse ourselves in the outdoor beauty. The ride back down the tramway was quick and easy, and we headed to bed early, eager to wake up in Glacier Bay National Park and maximize our time enjoying its epic scenery.

Day 4: Glacier Bay National Park & Icy Strait Point – A Double Dose of Alaskan Wonders
Morning in Glacier Bay National Park: Awe-Inspiring Glaciers and Wildlife
Glacier Bay National Park
Arrive: 7:00 AMÂ Depart: 4:00 PM
There’s a unique magic to waking up and realizing you’re already within the confines of a National Park. Our plans to see the National Park Service boat approach the ship were thwarted by the gentle rocking of the ms Eurodam, which lulled us into a deeper sleep than anticipated – a happy “oops!” The serene motion of the ship through the Inside Passage has been incredibly conducive to restful nights, ensuring we’ve enjoyed 8-10 hours of sleep every night on board, despite the semi-firm beds that aren’t usually our preference.

We headed to the main dining room for breakfast and once again found ourselves at a prime table by the back window. Breakfast with panoramic views of Glacier Bay National Park is an extraordinary way to begin the day. The sit-down breakfast experience is consistently amazing; I only wish our 7-day cruise was longer so I could try more from the menu. The eggs benedict remains a daily must-have, but I did branch out to try the Texas Toast French toast, which was absolutely fantastic. My husband, meanwhile, insists that everyone should indulge in a fresh butter croissant with Nutella, noting their remarkable freshness.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Exploration Café to visit the National Park Service tables and collect our coveted National Park Passport Stamp. They thoughtfully provided a special notepad featuring a cruise ship and Glacier Bay for the stamp, so there was no need to bring our physical passport book unless we preferred to stamp it directly. Throughout the day, rangers provided fascinating commentary, detailing the glaciers and the natural wonders we passed. A park ranger was also available in the Exploration Café to answer any questions. Be advised, if you hope to secure a seat by the windows in the café, an early arrival is crucial, as guests tend to settle in for the day.

We opted to return to our private balcony, ensuring that those in inside cabins could enjoy the prime viewing spots indoors. Sitting on our balcony, watching glaciers calve and being surrounded by such epic scenery, truly underscores why an Alaska cruise should be on everyone’s travel list. At one memorable moment, we even spotted a bald eagle majestically riding on a floating iceberg – a completely unexpected and delightful bucket list moment!

What truly amazed us was the generous amount of time the ms Eurodam spent at Margerie Glacier within Glacier Bay NP. We lingered for so long that I momentarily wondered if there was a technical issue! However, it became clear that the ship was deliberately rotating, ensuring that guests on both sides of the vessel had ample time and an unobstructed view of the entire glacier. This dedication to guest experience was genuinely impressive, surpassing our experiences on previous Glacier Bay cruises.

At one point, I ventured out to grab some Dive In burgers from Deck 9. This worked out perfectly, as Holland America had set up an excellent pop-up shop on the pool deck, offering a selection of Glacier Bay-themed gifts. I happily surprised my husband with a few books about Glacier Bay NP, knowing his enthusiasm for such historical and natural insights. The Dive In burgers were, once again, delicious! I particularly appreciate their inclusion of Beyond Burgers for vegetarian options and the ability to customize toppings.
As we slowly departed Glacier Bay and headed towards Icy Strait Point, it was the ideal time for a relaxing cruise ship nap with a view. I even awoke briefly to the sight of a humpback whale gracefully passing by our window – a truly magical moment.

Evening in Icy Strait Point, Alaska: A Rainy but Charming First Visit
Icy Strait Point, Alaska, US
Arrive: 6:00 PMÂ Depart: 10:00 PM
Our arrival at Icy Strait Point marked a brand new experience for us, and we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. We were absolutely delighted by this Alaska cruise port! The ms Eurodam was the only ship in port, creating a wonderful sense of having a private island all to ourselves. A pleasant walk connected the ship to the main areas, and for guests with mobility needs, a convenient cart shuttle was available every 10-15 minutes to transport them around the port terminal.
We hadn’t booked any excursions, preferring to leisurely explore the port on our own. Despite a steady downpour throughout our visit, Icy Strait Point remained charming and impressive. Well-maintained pathways guided us to the historic salmon cannery, which has been beautifully transformed into a museum and a collection of gift shops. The port also features several distinct restaurants and engaging activities.

We made a beeline for the crab shack, where my husband was eager to try fresh Dungeness crab, having enjoyed King Crab on a previous visit to Skagway. While he found the Dungeness crab fantastic, his ultimate recommendation was the reindeer chili – he declared it epic! A highlight of the port is the free, four-minute gondola ride that connects different sections of the terminal. This quick and scenic journey through the forest offers excellent views of the surrounding area. We learned about the high density of grizzly bears in the region, though sadly, we didn’t spot any during our visit.

We’re already discussing a return Alaska cruise to Icy Strait Point, hoping for better weather to fully experience the mountain gondola ride and its panoramic views of the entire region. “All aboard” was at 10 PM, and we concluded our day by watching bald eagles from our balcony as the Eurodam pulled away from Icy Strait Point, setting course for Sitka, Alaska.

Day 5: Historic Sitka, Alaska – Totems, Eagles, and Relaxation
Arrive: 8:00 AMÂ Depart: 4:00 PM
Our morning began with a serene awakening, surrounded by tranquil islands and calm waters as the ms Eurodam gracefully approached Sitka, Alaska. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous, offering a picturesque start to our day. The main dining room once again proved to be the perfect setting for breakfast, delivering another morning of impeccably prepared eggs benedict. I often marvel at how the chef consistently achieves such perfect poached eggs – truly some of the best we’ve experienced anywhere in the world.

I also enjoyed a plate of cute and tasty Belgian Waffles, adding variety to our morning meal. After breakfast, it was time to disembark and explore Sitka, with our primary goal being to spend quality time at Sitka National Historical Park – our 275th National Park Site visited together!
The Holland America Eurodam docked at the older cruise port outside of town, requiring a short walk to the main port area, followed by a complimentary shuttle into town. We opted for a taxi to reach the visitor center, which proved to be an excellent decision. Our knowledgeable taxi driver provided a fascinating historical narrative as he drove us through town, even making a stop at an overlook to point out the historic site where the Tlingit tribe famously battled with Russia, enriching our understanding of Sitka’s past.

Sitka National Historical Park is an absolute must-see during any visit to Sitka. It truly surpassed our expectations, and we would happily return. Be sure to allocate ample time to explore the park and stroll along the Totem Trail. This enchanting walk, surrounded by magnificent totem poles and frequently graced by bald eagles soaring overhead, has become one of our favorite experiences within the National Park Service. We lost count of the bald eagles we observed! While we didn’t encounter any bears, it’s wise to remain bear-aware during your visit, as they are known to inhabit the park.

After a few hours immersed in the park’s beauty and history, we took another taxi back into town to visit the Russian Bishop’s House, also part of the historical park. A quick and informative walk through its first floor provided further insight into Sitka’s Russian heritage before we caught the complimentary shuttle bus back to the port terminal. We noted that Sitka’s main shopping area is thoughtfully closed to traffic, making it a pedestrian-friendly zone for visitors to explore the shops and enjoy downtown Sitka. Many cruise guests seemed to be enjoying some excellent retail therapy. On our next trip, we definitely plan to visit the Raptor Center and the Fortress of the Bears to learn more about the crucial wildlife rehabilitation efforts in the area.

Back on board the Eurodam, we once again indulged in Dive In Burgers for lunch. A word to the wise: if you’re planning to enjoy Dive In Burgers, allow a solid 20 to 30 minutes for your order to be prepared. This isn’t a fast-food experience, so it’s best to arrive with patience rather than hunger-induced grumbles, as some guests unfortunately demonstrated when they learned about the wait. A peculiar observation: many of our burgers arrived with only a half slice of cheese. If you appreciate a strong cheese flavor or simply love cheese, consider requesting double cheese. Despite some inconsistencies with customization requests and the mysterious half-cheese slices, the Beyond Burgers consistently tasted amazing and were well worth the wait.
After lunch, it was time for one of our favorite cruise ship vacation activities: a revitalizing cruise ship nap! We were still in port when we drifted off, only to be pleasantly startled awake by the ship’s horn as we departed Sitka. For a fleeting moment, I was disoriented, a testament to how deeply relaxed we had become. This Holland America Alaska cruise had truly delivered on its promise of much-needed sleep and profound relaxation. The consistently rainy and grey weather, while perhaps not ideal for shore excursions, inadvertently created the perfect atmosphere for cocooning in our room, enjoying movies, and simply unwinding.

Our dinner that evening was another cozy room service affair, followed by more relaxation. We kept vowing to make it to the BB King’s Blues Club or the Lincoln Center presentations, but the allure of our comfortable stateroom and the deep relaxation proved too strong, often leading us to fall asleep before we could venture out.
Day 6: Ketchikan, Alaska – A Rainy Respite at Sea
Arrive: 7:00 AMÂ Depart: 12:00 PM
Our arrival in Ketchikan was met with a classic Southeast Alaska welcome: rain, rain, and more rain! The morning was undeniably grey and damp. We decided to head to the main dining room for breakfast, using the opportunity to consider whether to brave the weather in Ketchikan or embrace a relaxing day onboard.

Breakfast, yet again, was superb! I remain continually impressed by the consistent perfection of the poached eggs in their eggs benedict – a true culinary mastery. This morning, I also tried the banana bread French toast. It featured a unique oatmeal crust and a wonderfully strong, distinctive flavor. My husband opted for the full English Breakfast, which he thoroughly enjoyed, finding it both filling and delicious.

As we left the dining room, the cool, damp air wafting in from the open gangway solidified our decision. We exchanged a look and mutually agreed to forgo heading into town. Having visited Ketchikan several times before, and while we genuinely appreciate the city’s charm, we weren’t eager to start our day cold and wet. Instead, the day unfolded in a blissful blur of relaxation, finishing a captivating book, and simply watching the various boats pass by our window. The expansive balcony window allowed us to recline comfortably in bed and observe the world float by, an idyllic way to spend a rainy Alaskan port day.

Day 7: Sea Day, Victoria, British Columbia & A Culinary Grand Finale
Arrive: 8:00 PMÂ Depart: 11:59 PM
I must admit to a comical oversight on our final full day: we completely missed the memo that the ship’s clock had moved forward an hour from Alaska Time to Pacific Time! We barely made it to sit-down breakfast before they closed, having been in our room, blissfully unaware, counting down the minutes until we thought the restaurant would open. “Oops!” is an understatement; it had already been open for an hour by the time we arrived. Nevertheless, I was immensely grateful to still enjoy another exquisite eggs benedict breakfast. Yes, I indulged in the same breakfast every single morning of the cruise – it truly was that consistently amazing, featuring the most perfectly poached eggs I have ever experienced.
Upon returning to our stateroom after breakfast, a delightful surprise awaited us from Holland America. As this was our very first cruise with them, we had officially joined their Mariner program. A thoughtful welcome card accompanied two beautiful Delft ceramic coasters, adorned with a lovely image of the ship. I’m excited to use them at our desks as a tangible reminder of this wonderful cruise experience.

The weather remained grey, rainy, and a bit dreary, so we continued our theme of comfortable relaxation, dedicating the day to catching up on some work, enjoying another nap, and watching more movies. However, as evening approached, we finally roused ourselves from our room to experience the lively BB King Blues Club. We had so much fun that we stayed for 2.5 performances, soaking in the vibrant music and energetic atmosphere before heading to the Pinnacle Grill Steakhouse for a special date night onboard the Eurodam.

The Pinnacle Grill was nothing short of fantastic! My husband would unequivocally tell you that the trip was worth it just for the bacon appetizer. The sheer sigh of pure joy he expressed after his first bite of the candied bacon was truly memorable. He insisted that the entire dinner was justified by that single appetizer alone! I was keen to try the Beyond Burger Ground Steak, a vegetarian option on the menu, and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

To be honest, I hadn’t quite pictured a giant Beyond Burger presented on a fancy plate with red onions. While it tasted fantastic, and I’d happily enjoy a veggie burger daily, its appearance was a pleasant surprise. The absolute highlight of our Pinnacle Grill dining experience, however, was dessert. Oh my goodness, the desserts! I had long wanted to try a Jacques Torres Chocolate Dessert, having spent many hours watching him on Netflix’s “Nailed It.” The Pinnacle Steakhouse offers a Jacques Torres Chocolate SoufflĂ© – an absolute dream come true! I closed my eyes and simply melted into my chair; it was that incredibly good. Seriously, I would re-board the ship just for another bite of that chocolate soufflĂ©.

And to start the dessert course, we were presented with small chocolate truffles, including heavenly white chocolate passion fruit truffles. They were so utterly delicious that I actually asked the waiter if I could take the last couple back to our room – there was no way I was letting them go to waste! The entire Pinnacle Grill meal was a delightful experience, with the appetizers and desserts being the undisputed highlights. After dinner, feeling wonderfully full, we slowly made our way back to our room, ensuring everything was packed and ready for our morning disembarkation.

Disembarkation: Seattle, WA – Reflecting on an Unforgettable Holland America Alaska Cruise
Arrive: 7:00 AM
We arrived back in Seattle early, and opted for the convenient self-assist disembarkation. This is our preferred method when we have a long drive ahead, as it allows for a quick exit from the Seattle Cruise Port. With self-assist, you’re responsible for managing all your own luggage, which was no issue for us as we had packed relatively lightly for our 7-day Alaska cruise. The process was swift and seamless: a quick scan of our cruise card, a walk through customs, and then a hop onto the shuttle bus directly to the parking lot.
If only the 4.5-hour drive home could have been as quick and easy! Nevertheless, every moment was undeniably worth it. Experiencing our first Holland America Alaska cruise and spending a week indulging in relaxation amidst the epic Alaskan vistas was truly invaluable. Holland America Line offers a variety of Alaska Cruises departing from both Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. Many itineraries feature other stunning locations such as Tracy Arm Inlet or Endicott Arm, the colossal Hubbard Glacier, the gold rush town of Skagway, the breathtaking Misty Fjords, and Prince Rupert, not to mention exciting add-on land tours to iconic destinations like Denali National Park.
While this was our maiden voyage with Holland America, our cruising experience spans multiple other lines, including Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, and many more. For further insights and tips, explore all our cruise articles, covering not only Alaska Cruises but also Caribbean Cruises, Mexico Cruises, Baltic Cruises, and beyond!
