Have you ever dreamed of a cruise vacation that not only offers relaxation and adventure but also provides a meaningful opportunity to give back to the local communities you visit? Many travelers share this desire, yet often struggle with finding genuine ways to contribute, questioning whether their donations truly reach those in need or simply get absorbed by larger entities. This dilemma is a common thread for conscious travelers, including myself, as we seek to ensure our travel dollars make a tangible, positive impact on the destinations we cherish.

Experience Purposeful Travel: Carnival’s Give Back with Purpose Community Tour
Carnival Cruise Line has recognized this growing desire among travelers and responded with an innovative program: the “Give Back with Purpose” excursion. This unique offering allows cruisers to actively engage with local communities, moving beyond traditional sightseeing to foster genuine connections and provide direct support. During a recent voyage aboard the magnificent Carnival Splendor, I seized the opportunity to participate in this special excursion in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, eager to understand its true essence and impact.
My initial anticipation was a blend of curiosity and a touch of skepticism. The tour description painted a picture of a journey that was part community exploration and part immersion into a vibrant local surfing town. While my heart yearned to support deserving causes, the pragmatic side of me wondered how effective a cruise-sponsored tour could genuinely be. However, the core promise – that my time and resources would directly benefit others – was a powerful motivator, drawing me into this promising adventure.
Puerto Vallarta holds a special place in my heart; it’s one of my absolute favorite cities globally. The thought of contributing to its local fabric while delving deeper into the daily lives of its residents was incredibly exciting. This excursion offered a rare chance to see beyond the tourist façade and engage with the authentic spirit of this beloved Mexican destination.
Journey Through Jalisco: From Cruise Port to Coastal Towns
Our “Give Back with Purpose” journey commenced directly from the bustling cruise port, heading north along the picturesque coastline towards the charming towns of Sayulita and San Pancho. The scenic drive offered glimpses of verdant landscapes and traditional Mexican life, setting a relaxed tone for the day’s meaningful encounters. Our first stop was an authentic roadside stand, a sensory delight brimming with local flavors.
Here, we had the unique chance to sample exotic fruits like jackfruit – a sweet, fibrous delicacy – and refreshingly cool fresh coconut water, enhanced with a squeeze of lime and a dash of spicy chili pepper. This stop wasn’t just about tasting; it was a vibrant introduction to the local economy, allowing us to directly support small vendors by purchasing their homemade sweet treats and appreciating the abundance of fresh produce.

A Heartfelt Visit to San Ignacio School
Our next destination brought us to a local school in San Ignacio, an experience that evoked a complex mix of emotions. We arrived bearing baskets of fresh fruit for the students, a small gesture of goodwill. Spending time with these bright-eyed children, learning about their studies and daily routines, was truly eye-opening. I must admit, this portion of the day stirred some apprehension within me. I constantly worry about inadvertently disrupting the children’s learning environment or making them feel like an exhibit, especially when photography is involved.
However, my concerns began to ease as I witnessed the genuine excitement and open hearts of the students. Each child gratefully accepted a piece of fruit, their faces lighting up with immediate smiles as they savored the simple pleasure. They were eager to engage, asking us about our homes and names, their curiosity palpable. Their friendliness and apparent joy in our presence quickly transformed any lingering hesitation I had into a heartwarming exchange.

The students proudly showed us their school garden, a vibrant space where they cultivate fruits and vegetables, tending to it diligently during recess and after classes. This hands-on learning initiative not only provides them with fresh produce but also instills a sense of responsibility and connection to nature. We also learned about their keen desire to learn English. It was humbling to discover that, without a formal English curriculum, their dedicated teacher does her best to impart what she knows, striving to equip them with foundational English skills. I left the school with a sincere hope that our visit had been a positive and inspiring interlude in their day, rather than a mere disruption.
San Pancho’s Artistic Charm and Coastal Beauty
From the school, our journey continued to the enchanting town of San Francisco, affectionately known as San Pancho. This vibrant community boasts its own charming rendition of a “Golden Gate Bridge,” a local landmark that adds to its unique character. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the town’s colorful streets, admiring the myriad of impressive street murals that adorn its buildings, each telling a story of local culture and artistry. A brief walk along the tranquil beach offered a moment of serenity before we reconnected with our bus. San Pancho is truly a photographer’s paradise, with endless opportunities to capture its artistic spirit and coastal allure.

Our exploration of San Pancho led us to Mexicolate, a delightful chocolate shop with a profound mission. Here, we were introduced to their incredible work, learning about their dedication to spreading joy and love through the art of chocolate making. The passionate proprietors guided us through the intricate process of producing their exquisite chocolate, sharing their deep commitment to ethical sourcing and community empowerment. At the end of our visit, we had the opportunity to purchase their artisanal creations, directly contributing to the sustainability of their meaningful business.
Entre Amigos: A Beacon of Community Empowerment
Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of my entire day was the visit to Entre Amigos, a truly inspiring “helping hands foundation.” This community center is nothing short of amazing, and I left with a strong desire to find future ways to support their invaluable work. Entre Amigos stands as a testament to creativity and sustainability, focusing on transforming recycled products into vibrant works of art, breathing new life into discarded materials.

Beyond its innovative art programs, Entre Amigos hosts a magnificent library, serving as an invaluable educational and recreational resource for the entire community. It cultivates an open, inviting, and fun environment where both children and adults can gather, learn, and grow. Knowing that a portion of the tour cost directly supports Entre Amigos was incredibly reassuring and affirming. Their tireless efforts to collect recycling from multiple cities and transform it into beautiful, functional art underscore a profound commitment to environmental stewardship and community upliftment. This organization is a shining example of how grassroots initiatives can create lasting positive change.
A Culinary Interlude by the Pacific
After our deeply engaging community visits, we enjoyed a brief stop at the Cirque Du Soleil founders center, a fascinating glimpse into the world of circus arts, though no practice was underway during our visit. Then, it was time for a well-deserved lunch, served at a stunning restaurant perched right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The setting was absolutely gorgeous, exuding an incredibly relaxed and chill vibe that perfectly complemented the day’s reflective mood. It was the ideal spot to unwind and ponder the rich tapestry of experiences we had encountered.
Our tour guide added a special touch by preparing fresh guacamole and mole right at our tableside, allowing us to savor these authentic Mexican flavors as part of our delicious meal. While lunch itself was thoughtfully included in the tour price, any beverages were extra, typically ranging from $2 to $5. The restaurant conveniently accepted both cash and credit cards for drink purchases, making it easy to enjoy a refreshing drink with our meal.
Following a leisurely lunch, we began our journey back to the ship, with the remainder of the evening open to further explore Puerto Vallarta or simply relax. It’s worth noting that we had originally planned to visit a local turtle center, but it was unfortunately closed due to the local biologist being unwell for several weeks. Despite this small change, the day remained filled with enriching and memorable experiences.

Essential Travel Tips for Your “Give Back with Purpose” Excursion
To ensure you make the most of this deeply rewarding experience, here are some practical travel tips:
- Footwear is Key: You’ll be walking on various terrains, including sandy beaches that can get quite hot. I wore my beloved Birkenstocks, but found them less than ideal for hot sand. Opt for comfortable, closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals that can handle both walking and potentially hot sand. Water shoes could also be a great option.
- Carry Local Currency: While credit cards are accepted at some larger establishments, bringing a modest amount of Mexican Pesos (cash) is highly recommended. This allows you to purchase unique items from roadside stands, support local artisans at places like Entre Amigos, or buy additional drinks at lunch, ensuring your money directly benefits the local economy.
- Prepare for Travel Time: This is a comprehensive tour lasting approximately 6 to 6.5 hours, with about 1.5 hours dedicated to driving. Be ready for a comfortable ride in a van. The roads are generally smooth and straight, minimizing the chances of motion sickness, but it’s always wise to be prepared if you’re prone to it.
- Pack Smart: Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a hat or cap, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. A small backpack can be very useful for carrying your purchases and personal items.
- Embrace the Experience: Approach the tour with an open mind and heart. The beauty of this excursion lies in its direct interaction with the community. Engage with the locals, ask questions, and be present in the moment to fully appreciate the cultural exchange and impact you are making.
