One of our favorite pastimes was strolling along historic Creek Street, a picturesque boardwalk built over the Ketchikan Creek. Once the town’s red-light district, it’s now home to charming shops, art galleries, and restaurants. The colorful houses perched on stilts over the water provide fantastic photo opportunities. Ketchikan is also renowned for its rich Native Alaskan heritage, evident in the numerous majestic totem poles scattered throughout the city, offering a profound glimpse into Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures.

A truly delightful and unexpected highlight in Ketchikan was the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. After several hours of wandering and exploring Ketchikan’s charming streets, our feet were definitely ready for a break. We decided to take a chance on the show, and it was one of the best decisions of the trip! The performers, representing rival logging camps, demonstrated incredible feats of strength, agility, and skill in classic lumberjack competitions like axe throwing, log rolling, speed climbing, and chainsaw carving. The energetic commentary, combined with the impressive athleticism and friendly rivalry, made for a highly entertaining and memorable experience that left us cheering and laughing. The moment you arrive in Skagway, you’re transported back in time to the bustling days of the Klondike Gold Rush. Exploring Skagway is incredibly convenient; the cruise ship docks a short, easy walk from the main street, allowing you to quickly immerse yourself in the town’s unique atmosphere. The Red Onion Saloon in Skagway was an absolute blast! This historic establishment, once a prominent brothel during the Gold Rush, now serves as a lively bar and museum. The waitresses, dressed authentically in period costumes, were not only incredibly friendly but also fantastic storytellers, sharing intriguing anecdotes about the saloon’s colorful past. Stepping inside felt like a genuine trip to the late 1800s. I highly recommend trying the Madam Martini – it’s a delicious cocktail and a fitting tribute to the saloon’s heritage. One of the undisputed highlights of our visit was undoubtedly the legendary Red Dog Saloon.

It’s genuinely challenging to put into words just how much fun we had at the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau. Perhaps it was the lively atmosphere, the quirky decor filled with historical artifacts and, yes, even some taxidermy, or the seriously funny live musician who kept the crowd entertained with sing-alongs and witty banter. And, of course, a few of the infamous “Duck Fart” shots certainly contributed to the merriment! This iconic Alaskan establishment, with its sawdust-covered floors and rich history, is more than just a bar; it’s an experience. It’s a place where you can truly soak in the local flavor and connect with fellow travelers and Alaskans alike. A visit to the Red Dog Saloon is an absolute must-do when in Juneau.

During our day in Skagway, we seized the incredible opportunity to drive to the Yukon Territory in Canada. This scenic drive along the historic Klondike Highway is an adventure in itself. The landscape transforms dramatically as you ascend into the mountains, offering stunning vistas of rugged peaks, pristine lakes, and vast boreal forests. While we didn’t encounter as much wildlife as we had hoped for, the breathtaking scenery more than compensated. The feeling of crossing an international border into such a remote and historically significant region was truly unique. How often do you get the chance to visit the Yukon Territory on a cruise? It’s an experience that adds an extra layer of discovery to your Alaska adventure.

Thankfully, we made sure to do plenty of walking and exploring while we were in port, which helped to balance out the incredible gastronomic indulgence.

Among the myriad treats available on a Princess Cruise ship, one of my absolute favorites is the simple yet incredibly comforting offering of warm cookies and a cold glass of milk. Each afternoon, a friendly staff member would circulate, bringing these delightful refreshments to guests. We would often find ourselves sitting in the ship’s atrium, savoring our cookies and milk, while gazing out at the magnificent Alaskan scenery passing by. It was a small, perfect ritual that added a touch of warmth and hominess to our grand adventure, making those moments of relaxation even more special.
Sampling Local Brews at Yukon Brewing Company
During our extensive drive around the Yukon Territory from Skagway, we made a highly anticipated stop in Whitehorse, specifically to visit the Yukon Brewing Company. John, a craft beer enthusiast, was incredibly excited to sample their diverse range of beers, experiencing the unique flavors that reflect the spirit of the North. He even picked up a “Yukon Brewing Thirst Aid Kit” to enjoy back on the ship. As we walked back to the Golden Princess with our freshly acquired local brews, we received many friendly offers from fellow passengers eager to help us “consume a bit of Yukon Brewing Beer.” It was a fun and memorable way to experience a piece of the local culture in the Yukon Territory.
