Before diving into the festive attractions, it’s worth appreciating the rich history and unique character that makes Grapevine so special.
Grapevine is steeped in a proud heritage. It was on Grapevine soil in 1843 that General Sam Houston negotiated the Treaty of Peace and Friendship with ten Native American nations. This commitment to heritage, combined with the relaxing ambiance of Lake Grapevine and its surrounding green belts, gives the city a distinct small-town feeling.
Along Historic Main Street, visitors can explore over 80 locally owned shops, diverse restaurants, unique jewelry stores, and delightful winery tasting rooms, all contributing to Grapevine’s inviting atmosphere.
Indeed, it’s fascinating to learn that Texas holds the impressive title of the 5th largest wine-producing state in the nation! This adds another layer of charm to Grapevine, especially for wine enthusiasts.
A Festive Home Away From Home: The Gaylord Texan Resort Christmas Spectacle
My accommodation for this festive adventure was the magnificent Gaylord Texan Resort, a truly spectacular destination. I had the pleasure of staying here years ago for a corporate conference, but my schedule allowed little time to truly explore its wonders. Returning now, with ample time to discover every corner, filled me with excitement.
From the moment you step into the Gaylord Texan during the holidays, you are greeted with a jaw-dropping display. Millions of twinkling lights adorn every surface, making it difficult to decide where to focus your gaze first. The sheer scale and beauty of the decorations create an immersive Christmas experience unlike any other. After a day filled with exploration, I enjoyed a wonderfully restful night’s sleep, waking up feeling utterly relaxed and refreshed.
My room offered a delightful view overlooking the area where Santa Claus eagerly awaits children for festive photos. Waking up to the gentle strains of holiday music softly drifting into my room was a truly magical way to start the day. I spent the entire morning wandering through the resort, capturing countless photographs of the stunning holiday decor. Easily logging 5,000 steps before midday, I found myself captivated by the intricate details and festive ambiance that transformed the entire hotel into a grand Christmas spectacle. From giant nutcrackers to elaborate snow scenes, every corner offered a new visual treat.

Culinary Delights at the Gaylord Texan: An Unforgettable Breakfast
After working up a hearty appetite exploring the resort, I headed straight for the breakfast buffet, and it did not disappoint. The giant bowls of incredibly fresh fruit were a highlight, bursting with flavor. The buffet also featured delicious smoked gouda grits, freshly baked biscuits, and omelets made to order, alongside a myriad of other tempting options. This breakfast buffet is truly an experience not to be missed and provides the perfect start to a day of holiday adventures.
Grapevine’s Gastronomic Journey: From Fine Dining to Unique Flavors
My trip to Texas kicked off brilliantly from the moment I landed at Love Field. My first evening began with a memorable dinner at Dino’s Steak and Claw House. This distinctive Grapevine restaurant is uniquely housed within a vintage bank building, offering an atmosphere that is both elegant and historic.
A Grand Welcome: Dinner at Dino’s Steak and Claw House
The culinary journey at Dino’s was exceptional. I must confess, their butter brought a tear of joy to my eye—yes, the butter! Drizzled with a sweetened balsamic reduction, it was simply sublime and truly unforgettable. This elevated condiment set the stage for a meal that extended far beyond just exquisite butter. Our table was laden with creamy mac and cheese, perfectly cooked potatoes, and a decadent crème brĂ»lĂ©e. It felt like all the essential food groups were deliciously covered: rich butter, sweet sugar, savory cheese, and comforting carbs. Following this indulgent dinner, we embarked on a driving tour of historic Grapevine, witnessing the city’s transformation into a breathtaking display of holiday lights. It was an absolutely stunning sight to behold.
Evening Magic: A Driving Tour of Grapevine’s Holiday Lights
I was utterly captivated by the sheer volume and artistry of the lights adorning every corner of Grapevine. The city truly embraces its title, creating a wonderland perfect for last-minute holiday photoshoots. Throughout the city, numerous photo opportunities have been thoughtfully set up, providing enchanting backdrops for capturing festive memories. It’s a photographer’s dream and a delightful experience for anyone visiting.
A Taste of Italy: Dinner at Farina’s Winery and Cafe
For another unforgettable dinner, we ventured to Farina’s Winery and Cafe in downtown Grapevine. This restaurant offers a truly unique culinary creation: spaghetti pizza! While it might sound unconventional, it is incredibly delicious. Imagine all your favorite elements of a classic pizza combined with the comforting flavors of spaghetti—it’s surprisingly amazing. Beyond this innovative dish, Farina’s boasts an excellent wine list and an array of other exquisite foods, ensuring a perfect pairing for every palate.

Uncorking the Fun: Grapevine Wine Tours & Wineries
After a delicious breakfast, it was time for an exciting exploration of Grapevine’s acclaimed wine scene. I joined the Grapevine Wine Tours for an delightful morning and afternoon journey. The tour bus itself was a spectacle, playfully adorned with grapevines and a charming wine motif, instantly signaling the fun ahead. Stepping onto the bus, I was greeted by the cheerful chatter of a group of ladies celebrating an office outing, adding to the convivial atmosphere.
Our wonderful bus guide, John, was incredibly attentive and sweet, assisting each lady on and off the bus with genuine care, even before we had indulged in a sip or three of the finest Texas wines. His friendly demeanor made the experience even more enjoyable.

S&W Winery: A Taste of Germany in Texas
Our first stop was the simply gorgeous S&W Winery. The owners, retired military servicemen, cultivated their passion for wine production during their time stationed in Germany. They now offer an impressive selection of wines, sourcing grapes from both their Texas vineyard and California. I was particularly enamored with their Symphony wine and am already planning a return visit to purchase a few bottles to take home. I’m also bringing a bottle of their Zinfandel back for John, as its grapes are grown in the same vineyard as many of his other favorite Zins. I eagerly await his thoughts on it!

S&W Winery itself is a beautiful establishment, making it an ideal setting for a romantic date night or a leisurely lunch with friends. I could easily envision spending many relaxing evenings there if I lived closer to Grapevine. After an enjoyable tasting, we proceeded to Winewood for lunch. The restaurant had our tables perfectly set and wine poured upon our arrival—a truly welcoming touch that instantly put everyone at ease.
Seriously, if you visit Winewood, you absolutely must order a side of their Gouda mac and cheese. Trust me on this—it is incredibly delicious and an absolute must-try!
Su Vino Winery: A World of Unique Flavors
After a satisfying lunch, we headed to our final stop on the tour, Su Vino Winery. This winery truly offers something for everyone, boasting a vast gift section filled with humorous and unique wine-themed gifts. They produce an impressive range of over 60 different types of wine throughout the year. Their tasting experience invites you to explore an incredible variety, from a delicate Almond Champagne to a rich Salted Caramel Port. Su Vino is the perfect place to step outside your comfort zone and sample wines you might never consider trying elsewhere.

Exploring Historic Main Street & Creative Adventures
With a few minutes to spare before our next adventure, we took the opportunity to stroll along Grapevine’s vibrant Historic Main Street. This charming district is a joy to explore, especially during the holidays when it’s adorned with festive decorations and twinkling lights. The unique boutiques, art galleries, and local eateries create a wonderfully inviting atmosphere.
Unleashing Creativity: Painting with a Twist
After burning off a bit of that delicious spaghetti pizza, we headed to Painting with a Twist. This was a wonderful opportunity to tick off another item from my “40 new things before I’m 40” list: participating in my very first painting class! I initially felt a touch of nervousness, having never attempted to paint a full canvas picture before. However, as soon as I saw the subject we’d be painting—a perfectly Texan theme—I couldn’t help but giggle with delight. It felt like such a fitting activity for my trip to Texas.

This experience was truly enjoyable. Painting, I discovered, is surprisingly relaxing, and I’m already looking forward to finding another class soon. The atmosphere in the studio was electric, with everyone in the class having a fantastic time. The evening was filled not only with creativity and instruction but also with wonderful wine, abundant laughter, and cheerful chatter among the participants.
Concluding Your Magical Grapevine Christmas Experience
It’s incredible how many wonderful experiences we packed into just my first day in Grapevine. Every moment, from the dazzling lights of the Gaylord Texan to the unique flavors of the local wineries and the joy of a painting class, contributed to an unforgettable holiday adventure. There truly is something uniquely magical about experiencing Christmas in Grapevine, Texas.
This city lives up to its title as the Christmas Capital, offering a blend of historic charm, culinary delights, and festive celebrations that create lasting memories.
