The Philippines My Unexpected Life Essentials

My journey to the Philippines was an unforgettable tapestry woven with threads of exhilarating adventure, heartwarming laughter, a few heart-stopping moments, and a generous dose of the wonderfully unexpected. Throughout my entire stay, I found myself repeatedly thinking about a collection of experiences I never knew I needed in life until I set foot on these beautiful islands. Some of these discoveries were absolutely breathtaking, while others, I must admit, I would be perfectly content never to repeat.

Unforgettable Philippines: Life Lessons and Unexpected Adventures I Never Knew I Needed

The Philippines is a land of incredible natural beauty, vibrant culture, and unparalleled hospitality. But beyond the postcard-perfect beaches and lush landscapes, it’s a destination that offers profoundly unique experiences, pushing you beyond your comfort zone and into moments of pure, unadulterated life. From navigating powerful storms to exploring ancient underground rivers, my trip was a testament to the fact that the greatest adventures often lie in the unexpected.

Navigating Two Typhoons, Including a Super Typhoon

Truth be told, experiencing a typhoon was nowhere on my bucket list. In fact, I would have been perfectly content going through life without ever encountering such a powerful force of nature. Yet, fate had other plans for my Philippine adventure. The first typhoon made its presence known during my stay in the bustling capital of Manila.

It descended in the dead of night, its howling winds and torrential rain waking me from a deep sleep. While the city outside braced itself, my hotel room offered a surreal sense of safety. It was an odd feeling, being cocooned indoors, fully aware of the immense storm raging just beyond the walls. It was during this night, while tracking news on social media, that I learned of an even more formidable storm – a super typhoon – heading towards the country later that week. The realization was sobering, adding a layer of suspense to the remainder of my travels.

The second, more powerful typhoon caught up with me on the stunning island of Palawan, specifically while I was at the serene Lagen Island Resort in El Nido. Thankfully, we only felt the tail end of this super storm, sparing us the full brunt of its destructive power. However, it did lead to us being “stranded” at the resort on the private island, a truly unique experience in itself. All our planned island-hopping tours and activities were canceled due to severe small craft warnings, ensuring the safety of all guests.

Our journey to the island prior to the storm’s full impact had already been an adventure. Despite warnings against small boats venturing out, we were given special permission to proceed to our resort, resulting in an exhilaratingly wet and wild boat ride. It was a baptism by storm, setting the tone for an unforgettable stay. If you’re curious about the specific storm, you can read more about my personal encounter with Typhoon Karen.

Journeying 1.5km into an Underground Cave, Encountering a Poisonous Water Snake and Thousands of Bats

If you’ve followed my previous travel tales, you’ll know my feelings about caves: I’m not exactly their biggest fan. My claustrophobia tends to kick into overdrive, and the thought of being deep underground with limited escape routes is, frankly, terrifying. So, when the itinerary for my Philippine trip included a visit to a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was a vast underground river and cave system, I had to take a monumental deep breath and face my fears head-on.

The site in question was the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park on Palawan, an incredible natural wonder. As our small, paddle-powered boat glided into the dark, echoing maw of the cave, I found myself actively trying to meditate, squashing down every rising wave of panic. The sheer scale and geological formations inside were awe-inspiring, a silent testament to millions of years of natural artistry. The air was cool and humid, and the only sounds were the gentle drip of water and the distant chirping of thousands of bats clinging to the cavern ceilings, their silhouettes a constant, fluttering presence.

Then came the truly unexpected moment. Our knowledgeable tour guide, ever vigilant, spotted something truly unique: a translucent water snake, barely visible against the dark rocks. He asked our small group if we’d like a closer look. While my lovely boatmates all enthusiastically shouted “HELL YEAH!”, I was silently trying to regulate my breathing, reminding myself that it was contained, and that I was safe. It was a moment of intense fascination mixed with a healthy dose of primal fear, a vivid reminder of the cave’s undisturbed ecosystem. It was an experience that pushed my boundaries and left an indelible mark.

Finding a Travel Family: Three Sister Wives and an Adopted Travel Husband

Before your imagination runs wild, let me explain the unique bonds I formed on this trip! Throughout my Philippine adventure, I had the incredible fortune of connecting deeply with three amazing women and one wonderful man, who quickly became my cherished “travel husband.” This travel family dynamic added an entirely new layer of joy and camaraderie to the journey.

Having a “travel husband” proved to be incredibly practical, especially for a vegetarian like me. He became my trusted food taster, ensuring dishes were genuinely meat-free and safe for me to eat, saving me from any potential dietary mishaps. More than that, his cheerful presence and willingness to share in every experience made navigating the trip even more enjoyable.

My “sister wives” had me in stitches all day long. Their quick wit, shared laughter, and unwavering support transformed every moment, from waiting for transport to exploring new sites, into a memorable event. During our unexpected “stranding” on the island, we spent hours together, sharing stories, sipping delicious mango daiquiris, and staging impromptu photoshoots to pass the time. Oh, and I must mention Stef – she brought an inflatable flamingo for the pool, a detail that becomes a story in itself!

These friendships forged in shared adventure truly enriched my time in the Philippines, proving that the people you meet can be as impactful as the places you visit. You can find more of their adventures here:

Lounging with Lady Boy: Our Inflatable Flamingo Mascot

One of the most delightful and utterly unexpected companions on our journey was an inflatable pink flamingo, lovingly christened “Lady Boy.” This fabulous float made its grand debut when we found ourselves delightfully stranded on the private island, a consequence of the lingering super typhoon. Stef, with her impeccable foresight and sense of fun, had brought him along, and he quickly became the unofficial mascot of our group.

Lady Boy wasn’t just a pool float; he was a source of endless amusement and a symbol of our group’s resilience and ability to find joy in any situation. He joined us for our poolside mango daiquiris, became the star of our mini photoshoots, and offered some much-needed comic relief during our unexpected downtime. His brightly colored presence against the lush tropical backdrop and stormy skies was a constant reminder to embrace the whimsical side of travel, even when plans go awry. Spending time with Lady Boy, floating idly in the pool, became a cherished memory, highlighting how simple pleasures can transform an ordinary moment into something extraordinary during an adventurous Philippine escape.

The Unfulfilled Dream of Hugging a Water Buffalo

Long journeys, especially those lasting over five hours on winding, rain-slicked roads, tend to bring out the silliness in even the most composed travelers. Such was the case during one of our scenic drives in the Philippines. As we navigated the lush, rural landscapes from the comfort of our van, a peculiar idea began to take hold and escalate into a running gag: hugging a water buffalo.

These majestic animals, known locally as “carabaos,” are ubiquitous in the Philippine countryside, often seen grazing peacefully in rice paddies or pulling plows. They are powerful, gentle creatures, and their stoic presence somehow sparked this whimsical desire within our group. We even, to the amusement and probable bewilderment of our local guide, earnestly inquired if water buffalos were receptive to hugs. I’m fairly certain he thought we had collectively lost our minds, but he humored us with a polite explanation of their nature.

Throughout the remainder of that long drive, and indeed, the trip, water buffalos became our focal point. I accumulated far more photos of these serene beasts from the van window than I’d care to admit. Sadly, despite our fervent discussions and planning, the opportunity to actually embrace a carabao never arose. It remains an endearing, unfulfilled travel dream, a testament to the random, delightful tangents that often emerge when you’re exploring a new culture with great company.

The Unexpectedly Thorough Chocolate Spa Treatment and Shower Inspection

For this particular anecdote, I’m immensely grateful that no photographic evidence exists! During my initial stay in Manila, amidst the whirlwind of adventures, I decided to treat myself to a luxurious five-hour spa experience. It sounded like pure bliss: a decadent chocolate scrub, followed by a soothing chocolate body mask, culminating in a relaxing full-body massage. The thought of being enveloped in the sweet aroma of chocolate was irresistible.

The experience began as expected, with the skilled masseuse applying the rich, aromatic chocolate mask to my entire body. It was wonderfully indulgent. Following the mask, she instructed me to step into the private shower to rinse off. As I was rinsing, fully immersed in the warm water, I heard the shower door gently open. I naturally assumed she was coming in to hand me a fresh towel. I was mistaken.

Instead, she entered, not with a towel, but with a mission: to ensure every last speck of chocolate had been removed from my body. She proceeded to have me do a full 360-degree turn in the shower, meticulously pointing out any areas I might have missed. It was an incredibly thorough, undeniably awkward, but ultimately unforgettable moment of cultural difference in personal service. This was definitely not an experience I ever anticipated having, and it stands out as one of the most uniquely bizarre yet memorable parts of my Philippine journey.

Experiencing Paradise: Being Stranded on a Private Island

While the phrase “stranded on a private island” might evoke images of Gilligan’s Island, my experience in the Philippines was far from it. This wasn’t a survival situation but rather an unexpected, luxurious pause in paradise, a twist I certainly never imagined my life would take. The “stranding” occurred at the absolutely stunning El Nido Lagen Island Resort, nestled amidst the pristine beauty of Palawan’s lush tropical rainforest and surrounded by calm, turquoise lagoons.

The island’s isolation, brought on by the typhoon’s aftermath, simply meant our boat transfers and tours were temporarily on hold. Far from being a hardship, it turned into an idyllic escape. The resort itself was a sanctuary of comfort and elegance, offering world-class amenities and breathtaking views. We spent our days indulging in the simple pleasures of life: engrossed in books, savoring fragrant chai tea, enjoying the resort’s facilities, and, of course, taking advantage of the “buy one get one free” happy hour on mango daiquiris. The sound of rain against the overwater bungalows became a soothing backdrop to our impromptu relaxation, a gentle rhythm of nature that enhanced the sense of tranquility.

Being stranded allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the peaceful ambiance of Lagen Island, appreciating its natural beauty without the rush of a typical itinerary. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are those unplanned moments of calm and connection. It transformed a potential setback into one of the most cherished and serene memories of my entire trip to the Philippines.

Overall, my journey through the Philippines was a profound testament to the power of travel to deliver crazy adventures, endless laughter, and countless opportunities to push past fears and embrace the unknown. I am brimming with even more photos and stories to share with you all in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Philippines Department of Tourism and TBEX for meticulously organizing this incredible trip and ensuring every aspect of our experience was not only safe but truly exceptional. Their dedication allowed us to witness the unparalleled beauty and spirit of the Philippines firsthand.
