Cowboy Tavern – A Fond Memory (Closed)
Sadly, we recently learned that the much-loved Cowboy Tavern has closed its doors. While we hope for its return, we want to commemorate what made it such a special part of the Oakhurst dining scene.
Previously nestled 10 miles from Yosemite National Park’s southern entrance and 4 miles from Bass Lake, the Cowboy Tavern was a culinary highlight, located within the historic Sierra Sky Ranch Hotel, established in 1875. The restaurant, following a beautiful renovation, offered an eclectic blend of modern country aesthetics, from crystal chandeliers to striking bison head decor.
Its food was consistently epic. The Pale Ale Cheddar Dip was so incredibly good that it almost warranted a second order before entrees arrived. Other favorites included the hearty Shepherd’s Pie, perfect after a day in Yosemite, and the delicious Ziti Arabica. Desserts, like the pear crumble with house-made vanilla bean ice cream and brown sugar whipped cream, were equally memorable.
The Sierra Sky Ranch itself has a rich history, once serving as the area’s first working cattle ranch and a vital supplier to logging camps. It even hosted famous guests like John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe. While the Cowboy Tavern is currently closed, its legacy of exceptional food and charming atmosphere remains a cherished memory in Oakhurst’s culinary narrative. It operated seasonally, so guests always had to call ahead.

It’s important to clarify that Reverent Coffee Company operates as a dedicated coffee roasting company, focusing on the art and science of perfecting their coffee beans. They primarily sell their exceptional coffee online, rather than running a physical café or coffee shop for walk-in service. So, while you can enjoy their high-quality roasts, you won’t find a storefront to grab a cup on the go.
