Waterfall Splendor and Hood River Orchard Delights

Oregon, a land of unparalleled natural beauty, offers an array of experiences that captivate the soul. Last month, a long-held dream came true when I embarked on an unforgettable journey, courtesy of OXO and Travel Oregon, to explore the majestic Multnomah Falls and delve into the agricultural heartland of the Hood River Valley. For years, the iconic image of Multnomah Falls had beckoned, a silent promise of grandeur that I was eager to finally witness and capture through my lens.

Experiencing the Grandeur of Multnomah Falls and the Charm of Hood River

The journey began with the breathtaking spectacle of Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon and a true gem of the Columbia River Gorge. Standing at an impressive 611 feet, this powerful cascade plunges dramatically in two major drops, creating a mesmerizing natural wonder that draws visitors from across the globe. Its accessibility is remarkable; a quick, paved walking path leads directly to its base, allowing everyone to easily experience its majesty.

As you approach, the roar of the water grows louder, a symphony of nature that hints at the immense power contained within this natural landmark. The fine mist rising from the falls kisses your skin, a refreshing embrace that adds to the sensory immersion. For a truly unparalleled perspective, the iconic Benson Bridge, a stone arch bridge constructed in 1914, spans the lower falls. Walking up the winding path to the bridge offers an up-close and personal view, placing you almost within arm’s reach of the cascading water, a truly unforgettable moment that highlights the sheer force and beauty of the falls.

Multnomah Falls with greenery around it

Beyond the falls themselves, the Multnomah Falls area is a complete visitor experience. An historic lodge, dating back to 1925, houses a charming restaurant where you can savor a meal with a view, a well-stocked gift shop perfect for souvenirs, and an interpretive center that delves into the geology, history, and ecology of the falls and the surrounding Columbia River Gorge. As you wander the trails, keep your eyes peeled for vibrant wildflowers dotting the landscape and the possibility of spotting local wildlife, adding an element of discovery to your visit. The lush, emerald-green forest that cradles the falls is a vibrant ecosystem, teeming with life and offering endless opportunities for nature photography and peaceful contemplation.

From the refreshing embrace of Multnomah Falls, our adventure continued eastbound along the scenic Columbia River Gorge, leading us to the picturesque Hood River Valley. Hood River, Oregon, is a destination that beautifully blends outdoor adventure with agricultural bounty. While many recognize it for its sprawling 15,000 acres of orchards, which famously produce approximately 45% of the nation’s winter pear crop, it holds another, perhaps more surprising, title: the windsurfing capital of the world. The consistent winds funneling through the gorge create ideal conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding, transforming the river into a kaleidoscope of colorful sails. Imagine spending an exhilarating day on the water, followed by a delightful farm-to-table dinner, paired perfectly with local wines or ciders crafted from the very fruits grown in the valley. This unique combination of high-energy recreation and gourmet culinary experiences truly defines the Hood River charm.

Exploring the Delights of the Hood River County Fruit Loop

The heart of our Hood River exploration was the famous Hood River County Fruit Loop, a mesmerizing 35-mile scenic drive that weaves through the verdant Hood River Valley. This enchanting loop is a feast for the senses, guiding visitors past sprawling orchards laden with seasonal fruits, picturesque vineyards, dense forests, and charming family-run farms. It’s more than just a drive; it’s an invitation to connect with the land, taste its bounty, and soak in the breathtaking views of Mount Hood and Mount Adams that serve as a majestic backdrop. Along the way, numerous stops offer the chance to sample and purchase an incredible array of local produce, artisanal products, and farm-fresh treats – a true paradise for food lovers!

Cherries in a bowl

Our first delightful stop on the Hood River Fruit Loop was the charming Draper Girls Country Farm. Nestled just an hour’s drive from downtown Portland, this family-owned farm is an idyllic sanctuary for fresh produce and serene relaxation. The farm truly embodies the spirit of rural Oregon, offering a genuine connection to agriculture and nature.

Draper Girls Country Farm boasts an absolutely stunning flower garden, an explosion of color and fragrance that could easily occupy a photographer for hours. Beyond its visual appeal, the farm is incredibly family-friendly, featuring a delightful petting farm area where adorable goats and other farm animals eagerly greet visitors, much to the delight of children and adults alike. A highlight of the visit is the opportunity for “U-pick” experiences, allowing guests to harvest their own fresh produce directly from the fields. Depending on the season, you can fill your baskets with plump cherries, crisp apples, juicy pears, sweet strawberries, succulent raspberries, plump blueberries, tender peaches, and fragrant nectarines – essentially every fruit imaginable, picked at peak freshness for an unbeatable taste and a memorable farm experience.

Adding to the farm’s allure is its incredible vantage point, offering awe-inspiring panoramic views of Mount Hood. Imagine picking a basket full of fresh, ripe fruit and then finding a peaceful spot to savor your harvest, all while gazing at the snow-capped peak of Mount Hood looming majestically in the distance. It’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and agrarian charm, creating a truly quintessential Oregon experience that invites you to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

The Gorge White House heritage pear wine bottle

Our next stop, perfect for a delectable lunch and a refreshing cider tasting, was The Gorge White House. This historic 1908 Dutch Colonial home stands proudly in the heart of Hood River, offering more than just a glimpse into the past; it provides a vibrant hub for culinary and libationary delights. The Gorge White House is renowned for its diverse offerings, including exquisite wine tastings, crisp cider tastings, and a fantastic food truck serving up mouthwatering dishes made with local ingredients. Much like Draper Girls, guests can also enjoy the pleasure of picking their own fresh fruit and vibrant flowers, adding another layer of interactive farm experience.

During our visit, we had the wonderful opportunity to sample several of their distinct and incredibly delicious ciders. Trust me when I say these are not to be missed! Crafted with care from the valley’s finest fruits, each cider offered a unique flavor profile, from crisp and dry to sweet and sparkling. Complementing these delightful beverages was the phenomenal pizza from their on-site food truck, which was beyond delicious. The secret to its exceptional taste lies in the incorporation of fresh, seasonal produce harvested directly from the farm, ensuring every bite is bursting with flavor. Imagine gourmet pizzas featuring creative and tantalizing combinations like the Cherry, Bacon, and Gorgonzola, or the Spicy Sausage with Blueberry and Goat Cheese. For something truly unique, the Pear, Caramelized Onion, and White Cheddar pizza is an absolute must-try. These innovative pairings highlight the incredible versatility and quality of Hood River’s local produce, transforming a simple pizza into an extraordinary culinary adventure.

With its relaxed ambiance, stunning views of the Hood River Valley, and an array of delicious food and drink options, The Gorge White House provides the perfect setting to unwind and savor a leisurely afternoon. It’s a place where history, agriculture, and modern culinary craftsmanship converge to create a truly memorable experience.

Our final stop on this immersive tour was the magnificent Sakura Ridge, a breathtaking bed and breakfast nestled on 72 sprawling acres. Perched majestically, Sakura Ridge offers some of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of Mount Hood, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquility and natural splendor. The farm itself is a testament to the region’s agricultural richness, boasting thousands of fruit trees and an abundance of flowers that are simply beyond amazing, especially when viewed against the backdrop of the towering mountain. The commitment to fresh, local ingredients is evident in every aspect of Sakura Ridge, from its seasonal harvests to its culinary offerings.

As the day drew to a close, we indulged in a delightful dessert buffet at Sakura Ridge, a perfect culmination of our farm-to-table journey. Each pastry and sweet treat was a work of art, crafted with the same fresh, local fruits and ingredients we had encountered throughout the day. With bellies full of delicious treats and camera rolls filled with incredible photos from our day’s adventures—from the misty grandeur of Multnomah Falls to the fruitful bounty of the Hood River Valley—we began our scenic drive back to Portland. This day-long tour was truly an amazing experience, perfectly blending Oregon’s iconic natural wonders with its rich agricultural landscape and vibrant culinary scene. My sincerest gratitude goes to OXO and Travel Oregon for curating and hosting such an unforgettable and inspiring trip, allowing me to explore and share the incredible beauty and flavors of this remarkable region. It was a journey that deepened my appreciation for Oregon’s diverse offerings and created lasting memories.
