Double Mountain Brewery Debuts its First-Ever Canned Selection
After a decade exclusively dedicated to refillable glass bottles, Hood River’s acclaimed Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery is finally entering the world of canned beverages. Starting January 30th, customers can enjoy their award-winning Hop Lion IPA, Dry Cider, and a brand-new Czech-style Pilsner in convenient 12-ounce six-packs (the Pilsner will be available in March).
This strategic move doesn’t signify a departure from Double Mountain’s commitment to sustainability. Refillable glass remains central to the brewery’s identity, and their established program will continue unchanged. However, the team recognized a growing demand from customers for canned options suitable for outdoor adventures, concerts, picnics, and other settings where glass is less practical.
“For a long time, refillable glass has been the purest expression of who we are as a brewery, and that core value hasn’t changed,” emphasizes Matt Swihart, Owner and Brewmaster. “At the same time, we’ve listened to our customers and understand their desire for cans. Offering Hop Lion, Dry Cider, and Pilsner in cans allows people to enjoy Double Mountain wherever their adventures take them.”
In line with their sustainability ethos, all Double Mountain cans feature directly printed artwork, eliminating the need for plastic shrink sleeves that can hinder the recycling process. This cleaner, more environmentally responsible approach ensures that aluminum remains within the recycling stream. Empty cans and refillable glass bottles can be returned to any Oregon BottleDrop location or Double Mountain pub.
Hop Lion IPA (6.7% ABV, 65 IBU): This flagship IPA boasts a captivating aroma of tropical resin, tangerine, evergreen, and Northwest petrichor, followed by notes of tangelo and fresh bread on the palate. The finish offers a delightful combination of orange and dank pine.
Dry Cider (6.6% ABV): Crafted with apples sourced directly from Double Mountain’s own orchard, this cider features a blend of Newtowns and old-world cider apples, pressed and fermented using a unique house yeast strain. The aroma is characterized by notes of juicy pear, lychee, green fruit, and chamomile, leading to a tart, crisp, and refreshingly dry finish.
Czech-Style Pilsner (4.7% ABV, 37 IBU): This brand-new addition to the lineup offers a low-ABV option perfect for sessionable enjoyment. A clean, crisp, and classic Czech-style lager, meticulously brewed for optimal balance and drinkability. This no-frills brew embodies time-tested brewing traditions.
Double Mountain’s canned lineup will be available at local grocery stores and all Double Mountain locations.

State Line Distillery Introduces Lapsang Smoked Gin
Smoked gin is rapidly emerging as a distinct subcategory within the craft spirits movement, and State Line Distillery is embracing this trend with the release of its Lapsang Smoked Gin on February 1st. This innovative spirit incorporates Lapsang Souchong tea – a Chinese black tea traditionally smoked over pinewood fires – into a botanical blend that bridges the gap between gin and whiskey.
This unique expression aims to appeal to a dual audience: gin drinkers seeking bolder and more complex flavors, and whiskey enthusiasts curious about exploring the nuances of botanical spirits. The smoky character provides familiar complexity for whiskey lovers while retaining gin’s signature versatility in cocktails. Imagine martinis with added depth or Old Fashioned-style preparations with a lighter, more aromatic twist.
“We’re observing a growing segment of consumers who appreciate the depth and richness of whiskey but also desire the versatility of gin,” explained a representative from State Line Distillery. “Smoked gin effectively bridges that gap, delivering familiar smoky complexity through a completely different spirit category.”
The release reflects a broader shift within the American spirits industry, where consumers are increasingly drawn to cross-category flavor experiences. While American gin has traditionally emphasized citrus and juniper brightness, contemporary craft distillers are experimenting with savory, earthy, and umami-forward profiles. State Line’s Lapsang Smoked Gin is at the forefront of this movement, establishing smoked botanicals as a core focus even before the distillery’s single malt whiskey program launches.
Bartenders can utilize this unique gin in classic gin cocktails to impart added complexity or substitute it in whiskey-based drinks for a distinctive botanical alternative.
